Growing ‘pot-friendly’ fruits and vegetables
Growing fruits at home is no longer an impossible dream! “Many vegetables and fruits can be grown in a small pot. Most raw materials can be found in wet markets,” says Dr Wong.
It is easy to grow pineapples in a pot at home. Get a pineapple crown from wet market and start from there. “It takes around two years for a tiny pineapple to ripen,” he remarks. You may also buy sprouting chestnut and ginger at low price from market stalls.
“The environment determines the types of plants you can grow at home,” says Dr Wong. Herbs like rosemary and rue thrive in place with good ventilation and plenty of sunlight while ornamental plants, such as African violet and sinningia speciosa, grow best in air-conditioned area with insufficient sunlight. He adds that proper trimming of a plant is necessary to keep space between leaves so that the plant will not fall sick or rot. Removing dead or diseased parts helps reserve nutrients.
