History of QEH in 120 pictures
Kwong Wah Hospital, Kowloon Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) are all located on the hillside near main transportation networks. It fulfilled the requirements of hospital site outlined by the government and society, that healthcare facilities should be spacious and conveniently located on tranquil highland at that time. “QEH was a big project in design and construction. Natural light source and ventilation were of utmost importance as QEH was built at a time when air-conditioning was uncommon,” Edwin Wong, the architect in-charge revealed. There were many windows on both sides of the ward with a lot of ceiling fans. The entrance of wards was a corridor linking up the beds at both ends. The ‘Historical Corridor’ at the bridge connecting the new QEH Ambulatory Care Centre (Extension) and the Main Block at QEH currently houses an exhibition of more than 120 images of QEH, including news clips, architectural drawings and historical photos.
