Small gifts that mean so much
Whether it is a word of thanks, a card, a silk banner, or a painting, each thoughtful gift passed between patients and medical staff shows the givers’ appreciation and blessing for the dedication and care they received. Behind each unique and personal gift is the story of a human connection – and those who receive the gifts hold them dear and regard them as motivation to strive for the betterment of patient services.
A ring of truth
A promise ring is a sign of commitment between two people. A paralysed patient made her doctor a beaded ring, signifying her promise to be courageous in the face of illness, while the doctor promised to stay by her side through the dark times.
A poetic tribute
Caring about the needs of patients is paramount in quality service. Deceased sinologist Professor Jao Tsung-i gave his doctor a piece of calligraphy as a thank you gift for the exceptional care he received. The doctor posted a copy of it on a conference room wall as a reminder to colleagues of the need to take good care of elderly patients.
Moving image from a paralysed patient
“I shed tears along the way as I fought the disease, but the medical team made me see the beauty of the world,” wrote a quadriplegic patient who used her head and mouth to control a computer programme and create this piece of artwork, expressing her strong feelings in the patient journey. The painting was presented to the medical team in appreciation for their care.
An artistic expression of gratitude
A kidney transplant patient was finally able to resume his work as a teacher of Chinese painting after multidisciplinary treatment on his kidney and vision. He presented this beautiful work of art to medical staff to express his gratitude.
Source of courage
“I am fearful to mention and think of my illness. Thanks for saving my life. You are an angel sent to earth by God,” a patient suffering from a brain tumour told his doctor in a touching tribute.
A good teacher
“I devote my dedication to you all and feel happy for your accomplishments,” wrote a senior medic who unreservedly shares his valuable clinical experiences to trainees, encouraging them to become good doctors.
The fruits of learning
A staff who successfully went through emergency medical training posted messages to his trainer, saying, “The training is really fruitful and rewarding. My bag of knowledge is full now.”
15 minutes that transform lives
For a doctor, a 15-minute consultation is just part of his daily routine. For the patient and his family, however, the care shown during the consultation meant a great deal in his battle against the disease.
