Occupational Therapy Service

Occupational Therapy Service

Introduction

Occupational Therapy (OT) promotes health by enabling people to perform meaningful and purposeful activities.

Occupational therapists work with individuals who suffer from a mentally, physically, developmentally, and/or emotionally disabling condition by utilising treatments that develop, recover, or maintain clients' activities of daily living. They are concerned with assisting the clients to develop or re-establish their occupational roles with appropriate choice and adaptation, facilitating the clients to move from occupational dysfunction towards a more productive and active participation within their community.

Scope of Services

To actualise our vision that "all our clients shall lead the meaningful life of their choice", a work force of motivated and energetic staff have translated the ideology into diversified and comprehensive services. Apart from integration into services of general adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, old age psychiatry and intellectual disabilities, the main OT services has provided its unique programmes with as many as 40,000 attendances per annum. Services provided include vocational rehabilitation, life skills training and self-management. The establishment of the cognitive enhancement laboratory also signified a big leap forward in the cognitive rehabilitation of psychiatric patients.

For the out-patient service, the OT clinic of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry commenced its service in 2008 and followed by that for adult psychiatric patients in 2009. Moreover, we were actively involved in the Substance and Alcohol Abuse Service and the E.A.S.Y. services. The Mobile Cognitive Assessment Clinic was another pioneer service in old age psychiatry. In the coming years, we will continue to provide quality patient care with emphasis on the "recovery" concept.
