Teamwork and Leadership

In the field of healthcare, teamwork is a dynamic process involving two or more healthcare professionals with complementary
backgrounds and skills, sharing common health goals and exercising concerted physical and mental effort in assessing,
planning, and implementation of patient care. Healthcare policy makers increasingly advocate teamwork as a means of
assuring quality and safety in the delivery of medical services.

In the commercial world, teamwork involves different groups and different people across the business working together to
maximise their efficiency and to reach a common goal. There are many ways to organise teams – some teams are organised
around a particular product, while others are organised around a process, such as service, manufacturing, and research
works.

Effective teamwork has six characters: (1) Team members sharing common goal(s); (2) balance of contributions among
team members; (3) team members contribute their best efforts; (4) team members mutually support each other; (5) effective
communications and (6) cohesiveness throughout the team.

Effective teamwork is only possible when team members define team goal together and when the team is under the
leadership of a capable team leader.

When a team defines team goal together, it becomes a share vision that encourages team members’ commitment. There is
no definition of leadership. You know when someone is a leader when you see one. In this session, points will be illustrated
through sharing the beliefs and works of the top leaders of the world, including those who work in the commercial world, in
non-profit organisations and in governments.

More and more female have taken leadership positions these recent years. Following their stories makes one belief that it is
possible for successful businesswomen to strike a balance between work and family lives, while they continue to excel and
be very successful at work.

Joy and Meaning in Work Wednesday, 4 May

We come to work in healthcare with good intentions and do our best every day to ensure that patients are well cared for. It
is from this mission of caring for people in times of their greatest vulnerability and need that we find meaning in our work, as
well as our experience of joy. Yet we hear regularly of concerns about burnout with implications on the quality of care. In this
presentation, the speaker will share his thoughts on how do healthcare leaders create, nurture and sustain a workforce that
feels respected and supported, is resilient and fully engaged in organisational wide goals.
