In-patient Service of Department of General Adult Psychiatry

Introduction

The Department of General Adult Psychiatry (GAP) provides inpatient services for people aged 18-65, residing in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai districts. There are a total of 228 acute beds, 140 subacute / rehabilitation beds and 258 long-term care beds. These beds already include beds for early psychosis service and substance / alcohol misuse service. The acute wards also act as a short-term admitting place for cases of all other subspecialties while pending transfer to appropriate wards of those subspecialties, such as Old Age Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent and Learning Disability. Comprehensive range of treatment is provided including physical care, medication, psychotherapy, individual and family education and counseling, rehabilitation, psychosocial interventions and spiritual care.

Comprehensive range of care is provided by multidisciplinary team including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, dietitian, physiotherapist and medical social workers with formulation of care plans and regular review of patients' progress. Sources of admissions include psychiatric out-patient clinics, community psychiatric services, accident and emergency departments and wards of general hospitals. Continuity of care between in-patient and out-patient care, and post-discharge community aftercare are emphasized.
