Myths about dementia
1. Can playing mahjong prevent cognitive decline?
Though playing mahjong can maintain cognitive ability, the activity is a reflex action more than thinking, especially for experienced players. Therefore it is less useful in preventing dementia. Other games are thus recommended, such as playing cards, Rummikub and Monopoly.
2. Does bad memory mean dementia?
No. Memory loss may be a symptom of dementia in the early stage. Other signs include inability in self-care, getting lost easily in a familiar environment, having difficulty with simple calculation, and mood changes such as feeling low and anxious.
3. What are the communication tips with dementia patients?
• Keep dialogues simple and direct. For example, say “Wrap up well. It’s freezing.” instead of speaking in a blaming tone, “Don’t you feel cold? You’re wearing so little!”
• Address repetitive questions patiently or write down the answer for the patient. Avoid negative response such as “You have been asking me over and over again! I have answered that already!”
• Avoid correcting or criticising when the patient speaks something wrong, even if it is fantasy. Try to distract patient with other subjects.
