Established in 1984, the Prince of Wales Hospital is a regional acute hospital providing a full range of professional healthcare services for the population of the New Territories East Cluster, which has the widest geographical reach among all hospital clusters with a very large population. It is also a major teaching hospital of the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine, pioneering medical researches and nurturing healthcare professionals in Hong Kong.

It is my honour to succeed Mr Edward HO as the Chairman of the Prince of Wales Hospital Charitable Foundation with effect from 22 June 2017. The demand for public hospital service has been surging with the growing and aging population. Our existing level of public resources cannot meet every need. The Prince of Wales Hospital Charitable Foundation was set up in January 2007 with an aim to support hospital services through fund-raising, especially in the areas of service gaps that public resources cannot subsidize, so that patients can enjoy comprehensive care. The Foundation also supports the Hospital in improving the physical and mental health of the community and promoting medical education and research in collaboration with the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Thanks to the generous contribution of the benefactors and members of public, the Prince of Wales Hospital Charitable Foundation has launched various funding schemes and initiatives over the past 10 years, improving the quality of life of patients and the quality of care. One of the examples is Project CHEERS launched in 2011. It has been subsidizing discharged patients with financial difficulty to receive community nurses’ home visits for free as well as supporting the Community Nursing Service of the Hospital to buy advanced wound dressings for treating severe pressure sores and wounds. More than 2,000 patients have benefited from the Project. Additionally, the Foundation has sponsored the Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology of PWH to purchase a “Retrofit Direct Digital Radiography System”, enabling X ray images to be instantly transmitted to patients’ electronic health record system, speeding up the diagnosis process.

Apart from the above programmes, the Foundation has recently kicked-off the Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Funding Scheme and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Funding Scheme, subsidizing patients with Parkinson’s disease and patients with high risk of heart attack to undergo highly specialized operations as early as possible.

As the Chinese saying goes, a light spark can light up the prairie! Please continue to support the Prince of Wales Hospital Charitable Foundation, joining hands with us to light up more and more lives of patients in need.
