Introduction

Dietetic service is one of the allied health service, which provides nutrition therapy and nutrition education as part of prevention and treatment of diseases. Patients who require dietetic service are referred by HA doctors for nutrition therapy.

Scope of Services

Nutrition Assessment (Including Malnutrition Screening)

Malnutrition screening is implemented among patients in order to recognize and provide early nutrition support to the malnourished patients. Dietitians assess nutritional status of individual patients, estimate their nutrients requirements and give individualized meal plans. Good nutrition is essential for reducing risk of complications and enhances rehabilitation in long hospital stay patients.

Nutrition Therapy

By controlling and regulating energy and nutrients intake in diet, these help to control clinical symptoms, reduce risk of complication and aid pharmaceutical and surgical treatment for better treatment outcome.
There are many clinical conditions which require nutrition therapy such as diabetes, renal disease, liver disease, high blood lipids, hypertension, underweight or overweight, obesity, gastrointestinal disease, gout, malnutrition, eating disorder etc.
Dietitians arrange appropriate hospital diet or tube feeding regimen for patients who have swallowing difficulties, diarrhoea, oesophageal obstruction, coma, poor appetite, in order to meet their nutrients requirements.

Nutrition Education and Counseling

Patients need to maintain adequate nutrition with a balanced diet. All discharged patients, elderly, patients with chronic illnesses and their carer need to understand their nutrition therapy and relevant nutrition information provided. Dietitians hold regular nutrition education classes to keep them informed and updated.Diet sheets, recipes, food models and audio-visual appliances are used to facilitate better understanding of how to modify their dietary habits and meal plan.
