Background

EYE BANK, under the management of Hospital Authority since 2000, was brought under the administration of Hong Kong Eye Hospital in December 2009. Eye Bank is responsible for coordinating eye tissue donation in Hong Kong, with a mission of providing quality eye tissues for patients to restore their sight and working with corneal surgeons to foster advances in the management of corneal diseases. To ensure the quality of cornea and the safety of recipients, we comply with a standard certified by Sightlife, a leading international eye bank, since 2016, and are re-accredited every 2 years to maintain this qualification. Starting from 2016, cornea is distributed to the appropriate patient by an electronic centralized register. We will deliver the cornea to the operating rooms of different hospitals immediately once the patient and surgery have been arranged.

Scope of Service

1. To provide 24 hours on-call eye donation service covering whole of Hong Kong (from both public and private institutions) 
2. To encourage eye tissue donation and provide grief counseling for the deceased family 
3. To recover, process and distribute ocular tissue for transplantation 
4. To conduct educational and promotional activities to increase eye donation awareness 
5. To promote education, training and research in the management of corneal diseases
