Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery: Cost Effectiveness

Traditional open spine surgery involves a midline incision with periosteal dissection of paraspinal musculature from the
spinous process and lamina which may cause muscular denervation, increase intramuscular pressure, ischaemia, necrosis
and resulting in muscle atrophy and scarring, which is associated with prolonged post-operative pain and disability. Minimally
invasive surgical techniques and technologies have been increasingly introduced in spine surgery over the last decade. It has
been reported to be as successful as open techniques in different spinal surgeries like lumbar decompression, discectomy,
fusion and fracture fixation with less disruption of surrounding soft tissue structures. It is reported that it may have less
operative blood loss, shorter hospital stay and less post-operative pain with comparable surgical outcomes and complication
rate. In this presentation, the cost effectiveness of minimally invasive spinal surgery versus traditional open surgery will be
discussed with literature review.
