                                    Management for Millennials

Many of today’s enterprises are still operating in the management prisons of the Industrial Age. With Millennials set to make
up 50% of the global workforce by 2020, many of us employers are still at a loss in working with this new wave of workforce.

It is an irony that while we are sitting on top of a more democratised workplace of the 21st century , we are still embracing the
mid 20th century management system and the 19th century management principles.

We as employers must understand millennials on their characteristics and preferences at the workplace, so that we can
develop relevant strategies to engage them, appropriate management process to inspire them and updated management
system to empower them as team members.

Today’s leaders, be they business leaders or social leaders at large, need to move away from hierarchy and bureaucracy to a
more collaborative and network approach where team building is the key.

The future of management and leadership is all about empowering the “Me” generation of Millennials into a “We” community
                                    of team players.

Engage Your Workforce: Auxiliary Medical Service’s Experience
                Hui SWK
                Auxiliary Medical Service, Hong Kong

The Auxiliary Medical Service (AMS) is a government department under the Security Bureau with about 4,700 volunteers.
Volunteer members come from all walks of life and include doctors, nurses, pharmacists and paramedics. Its main role
is to reinforce regular medical, health and ambulance services during emergencies and to provide backup in normal
                circumstances.

Take a mass casualty incident as an example. Duties of the AMS can be broadly classified into two areas: providing
assistance at scene and in hospital. At scene, members will assist in casualty conveyance, perform casualty triage and
provide medical treatment. In hospital, members will provide assistance to the Accident and Emergency Department and
                wards.

Different contingency plans have been developed in the AMS to respond to various kinds of disasters or emergencies. With a
view to mobilising volunteer members in a more effective way, various types of call-out mechanism have been used to make
sure that AMS personnel can rapidly respond according to the intensity level of an emergency. AMS headquarters regularly
updates the plans and makes every effort to make sure members are familiar with them.

Another crucial element contributed to the achievement of the AMS is the development of the Disaster Medical Assistant
training for members. Other than the regular training, special training programmes will be arranged for specific units so as to
ensure that members are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills in dealing with different kinds of disasters.

AMS members serve the AMS with great commitment. They attend training and perform duty regularly in a voluntary
capacity. In the 2016 Hong Kong Marathon, a total of 812 volunteer members including 36 medical officers and 55 nurses
were deployed to render paramedic services to the participants. It is not an easy task to mobilise such a large number of
                members.

The success of engaging volunteer members’ involvement can be achieved with two important factors. The first one is to
equip them with the appropriate operational knowledge and skills for their work as mentioned above. The second one is to
build up their morale and team spirits. With a well-structured commendation/award mechanism and the support of various
social/welfare activities, members’ spirits are effectively enhanced. Esprit de corps can be found in every team and among
different groups of member in the AMS. Members serve the force with devotion and dedication.
