The Emergency Care Centre has been designed to improve and reform pathways for emergency patients at the Queen
Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. The centre will provide co-located and integrated facilities for adult medical, paediatric and
surgical assessment, medical and surgical short stay, accident and emergency care and a walk-in centre. Through a single
front door, emergency patients will access facilities to assess, diagnose and promptly treat them. The aim of the facility is to
improve quality of care, safety and productivity whilst reducing waste and duplication of service.

In addition, the new facility will provide a new main entrance and arrival point to the hospital at the front of the site. The
extensively researched clinical specification requires the design to be based on a linear process incorporated in specialised
assessment pods.

Emergency care and assessment facilities are located at ground access level incorporating 56 identical assessment rooms in
seven flexible pods supported by diagnostic and resuscitation pods.

The first floor provides two 24 bed short stay inpatient wards, all beds being provided in identical single bed en-suite rooms.
Public amenity cafe and retail spaces are provided within an atrium space at the lower ground level while general hospital
ancillary space is accommodated on the same floor plate.

By expression of the building’s mass through a contemporary and balanced palette of materials, the building’s appearance
sets it apart from the existing context. Deliberately the materials contrast with the existing to signify the building’s civic
importance and to set a precedent for the site beyond.

Developing Cost-effective, High-quality Healthcare Design HOSPITAL AUTHORITY CONVENTION 2015

Murphy Philipps, UK

As the founding partner at the Murphy Philipps HK, a specialist healthcare architectural practice, the speaker will describe
the context and development of the UK primary care design guidance and its application on one of their award-winning
schemes, Finchley Memorial Hospital, a community hospital in London.

Murphy Philipps HK has undertaken comprehensive research into the layouts of healthcare buildings. A variety of building
footprints were reviewed and some of the key findings will be presented. The results provide an insight into maximising
building efficiency and reduce costs whilst maintaining a high level of design quality.

The issues of long-term flexibility and adaptability are illustrated by the practice’s recently completed community hospital
in North London, which sits within a broader health campus. The building demonstrates a flexible approach to healthcare
planning, as well as embracing principles of urban design and sustainability. The scheme is the result of a successful public-
private partnership and has won several awards and commendations and has featured in articles and exhibitions.
