How Crew Resources Management Training Improves Safety in Aviation Industry
MacLeod N
Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong

The overall goal of Crew Resources Management (CRM) training is to improve safety but the current curriculum models
are rooted in business psychology. Recent attempts to develop competence frameworks have forced us to re-evaluate
the relationship between performance and underpinning knowledge. The speaker will address the problem of how the
CRM syllabus needs to be configured to achieve the goal of building organisational resilience and to support the Hospital
Authority’s values of “professional care” and “teamwork”.

Parallels between the Hospital World and the Aviation Community — a Pilot-surgeon’s View
Haerkens M
Wings of Care, The Netherlands

Medical care frequently results in unintentional harm to patients, and statistics do not seem to improve. The clinical
environment is especially unforgiving for mistakes due to the multidisciplinary, sometimes time-critical nature of care and
vulnerability of the patients. Human factors account for the majority of adverse events, and a sound safety climate is therefore
essential. This presentation focuses on the parallels and differences in safety culture between (clinical) medicine and (military)
aviation. The application of aviation-derived Human Factors Awareness training called Crew Resource Management (CRM)
in clinical medicine is discussed. CRM focuses on teamwork, threat and error management, and blame-free discussion of
human mistakes. Although evidence is still scarce CRM promises to be an effective tool for culture change in the hospital
setting, if supported by leadership and well-designed follow-up.
