o
demonstrate the readiness for treating patients exposed to high
levels of radiation, the Hospital Authority organises radiation
drill regularly at its hospitals.
The scenario simulates a radiation leak accident and plant workers are rushed to hospital for treatment. Healthcare workers and physicist in full protective gear treat the patients at the radiation emergency area (REA).
"It is a great learning experience for colleagues at hospitals. We can learn a lot about emergency management and manpower allocation," said Dr Choi Yu-fai, associate consultant of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital's A&E department. "It's vital for our staff to have the required knowledge for handling radiation outbreaks."
"Although radiation leak is unlikely to happen in Hong Kong, it is always good to get prepared," said Dr Tsui Kwok-leung, senior medical officer of A&E at Tuen Mun Hospital.
The following hospitals run at least one radiation drill every year. Each drill usually involves about 30 staff.
