The Jockey Club Integrated Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre, located at Tai Po Hospital, was established with a donation of HK$39.9 million from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and commenced service in April 2017. The centre breaks through the spatial limitations of traditional psychiatric wards, providing a better therapeutic environment for inpatients. Through a multidisciplinary team that includes occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and psychiatric nursing, the centre offers pertinent and diverse quality rehabilitation to assist patients in their recovery and prepare them for reintegration into society.
The centre features a simulated kitchen facility to provide self-care and household management training, enhancing patients' daily living skills. It also introduces professional cognitive training equipment to strengthen memory, attention, and executive functions, thereby delaying cognitive decline and improving self-management skills. Moreover, the centre offers leisure experiences such as indoor hydroponics, outdoor gardening, and handicrafts to help patients achieve life balance and alleviate stress. Besides being equipped with various exercise training equipment to improve patients’ physical fitness and coordination, the centre offers mind-body exercise classes such as stretching, breathing techniques, relaxation, and mindfulness to improve patients' depressive moods and help them develop exercise habits and a positive attitude toward life. The centre also hosts recovery-oriented seminars, such as patient caregiver support groups and peer support groups, to help patients and their families have a better understanding of psychiatric illness, find goals and direction on their recovery pathway, establish a positive self-image, and rebuild a meaningful life.
