Introduction

The Department of Clinical Pathology, locating in the Pathology Block of Tuen Mun Hospital, provides comprehensive laboratory services to Tuen Mun Hospital and other hospitals in New Territories West Cluster, covering various disciplines including Core Laboratory service, Anatomical & Cellular Pathology Laboratory service, Haematology & Serology service, Blood Bank service, Chemical Pathology service and Microbiology Laboratory service. The two Hospital Mortuaries are also managed by our department.

Services

  1. The Core Laboratory provides 24-hour service for urgent chemical pathology tests. After normal office hours, reception of all pathology specimens, urgent Haematology tests and CSF microscopy are supported by the Core Laboratory in order to meet clinical need.

  2. The Anatomical and Cellular Pathology Laboratory provides diagnostic services in histopathology, cytopathology, and autopsy.

  3. The Haematology & Serology Laboratory provides a broad spectrum of haematology laboratory tests, bone marrow diagnostic service and blood bank support.

  4. The Microbiology Laboratory provides comprehensive range of Microbiology Laboratory Services and Infectious Disease Consultation Services. The Microbiology Unit also provides support to the Infection Control Teams of this cluster which is under the leadership of the Consultant Microbiologist and Cluster Infection Control Officer.

  5. The Chemical Pathology Laboratory provides services for chemical pathology tests including general chemistries, thyroid function test and hormones, tumour markers, TDM and antibiotics, specific proteins, toxicology screening, drug of abuse screening, trace metals and consultative advice to clinical colleagues.

  6. There are two Mortuaries in TMH, which are located on the ground floor of the Main Block and on the ground floor of the Rehabilitation Block. Both Mortuaries are managed by the Department of Clinical Pathology and aimed to provide quality afterlife services to the deceased and their relatives.
