Introduction

The Role of Pathology Service

The Department of Pathology is responsible for the examination and analysis of various types of patient specimens such as blood, urine, stool, body fluids and tissues in order to provide important information to the clinicians for diagnosis and treatment of diseases and monitoring of clinical management. The Department also provides blood transfusion and autopsy service. Besides, the Department of Pathology is a major centre for postgraduate and professional training.

Who are we

There are more than 270 staff in the Department of Pathology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which include pathologists, scientific officers, medical laboratory technologists, management and supporting staff.

Scope of Services

Scope of Service and Organization

The Department consists of five main Disciplines, namely Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Blood Bank, Medical Microbiology and Molecular Pathology. We provide many different types of pathology testing and over 10 million tests are performed each year. Services are generally provided during usual office hours but 24-hours services are provided for Blood Bank and some urgent or frequently requested tests. Our services are mainly provided to in-patients and out-patients of Queen Elizabeth Hospital and hospitals / clinics of Kowloon Central cluster but some services are also provided to other hospital authority hospitals and private health care organizations.
