Occupational Therapy
Introduction
Occupation therapy is the design and use of purpose activities (Occupations)for individuals who are limited by injury or illness, psychosocial dysfunction, developmental or learning disabilities, to maximize independent functions in daily activities of self-care, work and leisure, prevent disability and enhance quality of life.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the largest hospital under the management of the Hospital Authority. The Department of Occupational Therapy is the member of the Allied Health Team of Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Owing to the nature of our hospital, the Department of Occupational Therapy offers a full spectrum of services which covers the rehabilitation service from in patient, day patient and outpatient services; and the client type range from infants to elderly.
In Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Occupation Therapy's scope of service is broadly divided into two categories:
- Physiological and Pathological conditions: vascular disease (stroke), traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, cancer, spinal cord injury, burn injury, sports injury, hand trauma, fracture, degenerative disease, neurological disease, amputation.
- Learning and Developmental delay: high risk infant, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, developmental delay, mentally handicapped, autism, heredity disease, emotional barrier, sensory integration impairment, and learning disability.
In general, occupational therapy provides activities of daily living (ADL) training, social skills training, and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) training, community re- integrated service, vocational counselling and training, design and fabrication of splint, and pressure garment therapy.
In collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Department of Occupational Therapy also provides clinical education to local and oversea students. In addition, we routinely conduct exchange program to educate mainland therapist on the latest occupational therapy service development in Hong Kong.
In areas of research, we offer our expertise to doctors working in Queen Elizabeth Hospital and collaborate with other University to conduct related rehabilitation researches.
