Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology

Introduction

The Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology (DIR) is one of the clinical departments of Queen Elizabeth Hospital which is led by the Hospital Chief Executive Dr. Eric Cheung. The department is functionally divided into two divisions - the main department and the Nuclear Medicine division, both under the leadership of the Dr. WL Poon, who is the Deputy Hospital Chief Executive (Operations), Service Director (Radiology) of KCC and Chief of Service of the department.

History:

The Jockey Club Institute of Radiology and Imaging was established in 1963 when it was the X-ray Department of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Radiology led by Professor HC Ho. It was renamed as The Jockey Club Institute of Radiology and Imaging after refurbishment in 1996. We installed the first Computed Tomography (CT) system in 1982 and the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system in 1992.

The Nuclear Medicine Unit in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) is one of the first Hospitals in Hong Kong to provide Nuclear Medicine services. The first Gamma Camera in Hong Kong was installed in QEH in 1973. In year 1996, QEH has installed its first dual head Gamma Camera and a Single Positron Emission Computed Tomography/Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT) scanner was installed in 2006. With the advancement in Nuclear Medicine technology, the first Positron Emission Tomography with Computed Tomography Scanner (PET/CT) in the Hospital Authority was installed in QEH in 2003, the PET/CT scanner was replaced with a more advanced version in 2015. Nowadays, more than 3600 PET/CT examination are performed in QEH annually. The Nuclear Medicine Unit now has four Gamma Cameras (two SPECT & two SPECT/CT scanners), one PET/CT scanner and one Bone Densitometer serving patients of Kowloon and the New Territories regions.

Scope of Services

Plain Radiography
In line with the objective of Filmless HA project, our department is now equipped with digital radiography (DR) and computed radiography (CR) machines for plain radiography. These machines are deployed in various locations for general radiography, portable radiography and Accidental & Emergency Department.
Locations: 1/F Block K, 6/F ACC and AED
Special Radiography
A number of examinations which involve the use of contrast agent(s) are regards as special radiography. For examples, Intravenous Urogram (IVU), Barium Meal, Barium Follow Through, Barium Enema, Hysterosalpingography (HSG), Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS), and Micturating Cysto-urethrogram (MCU).
Locations: 1/F Block K and LG Block H
Ultrasonography (USG)
USG is used for the examination of, for example, abdomen, thyroid, and brain of infant. USG can also be used as guidance in fine needle aspiration/biopsy (FNAB) and drainage procedures
Locations: G/F Block K, & 6/F ACC, and Block G Imaging Center
Digital Angiography
With the use of contrast agent and digital subtraction technology, angiography can be produced with minimal superimposition with adjacent body structures.
Locations: G/F Block K
Computed tomography (CT)
CT is useful for the diagnosis of the cases of trauma, aortic dissection, pulmonary embolus, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and many other diseases.
Locations: 1/F Block K, G/F Block E, and Block G Imaging Center
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Without using ionizing radiation, MRI is able to provide cross-sectional image of different parts of human body.
Locations: Basement Block J, and Block G Imaging Center
Interventional Radiology (IR)
IR cases include abscess drainage, endovascular embolization, transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), PICC line insertion, and CVC placement.
Locations: G/F Block K
Nuclear Medicine
The Nuclear Medicine Unit and the Clinical PET Centre are providing the following services:
  • Diagnostic PET/CT: Whole Body FDG scan, Brain & Cardiac FDG scan.
  • Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine: myocardium perfusion, MUGA, bone scan, renal function/cortex scan, gallium scan, hepatobiliary scan, GI bleeding scan, gastric emptying, brain imaging for epilepsy/dementia, brain death scan, sentinel node mapping scan etc.
  • Therapeutic Nuclear Medicine: Y-90/Re-186 Radiation Synovectomy, I-131 MIBG & Y-90/Lu-177 Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRNT).
  • Dual Energy Bone Densitometry Scan
Locations: LG Block K, and PET Centre (Block P)
