Accident & Emergency

Introduction

Queen Elizabeth Hospital is one of the 17 public hospitals under the Hospital Authority that provides Accident & Emergency (A&E) service. Our A&E was established in 1962.

We provide 24-hours specialist-led service, serving most parts of the Kowloon urban areas. The average daily attendance is over 500 patients. We provide consultation and treatment to patients requiring emergency service. Patients who do not require emergency service are encouraged to seek medical consultation and treatment in other public or private clinics.

Scope of Services

Our mission is to provide quality specialized emergency care to patients by a team of well-trained and qualified staff. The HA-wide adopt 5-point Triage System to assess and prioritize patients according to their clinical conditions.

Our department has high-technological equipment and facilities for management of emergency patients. A fully-equipped Resuscitation room with ceiling-mounted X-ray imaging facility was set up in 1996, with computerized radiological technology developed in 1999. The resuscitation room was further upgraded in early 2006 with installation of negative pressure facility to provide a safe environment for resuscitation of patients suffering from airborne infectious disease.

Our department has become one of the five designated major trauma centers in Hong Kong since 2003. Senior staff of our department acts as trauma team coordinator on 24-hour basis. Besides, our department is one of the major receiving hospitals for all kinds of disasters and major incidents, including major fire incidents, serious traffic accidents, HazMat incidents, infectious disease outbreaks, airport disasters etc. Our outgoing Emergency Respond Team consisting of doctors, nurses, and supporting staff, is ready 24-hourly to respond to situations requiring emergency medical cares, such as patient entrapment, aircraft crash disaster, or other incidents.

In 2011, our department has established the Emergency Toxicology Team. A team of emergency doctors with professional toxicology training provides the clinical consultation and expertise care to the poisoned patients. In 2012, this team was accredited by the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine and the Hong Kong Poison Information Centre as one of the designated toxicology training center in Hong Kong.

In late 2014, our department initiated the Rapid Assessment & Treatment (RAT) project to enhance the consultation and treatment provided to the urgent patients within RAT service hours. Senior doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff work together in teams to expedite the logistic of treatment and care provided.

Emergency Medicine Ward (EMW) is an extension of our A&E service to provide short-stay in-patient service including active treatment, observation and reassessment of target conditions by a team of medical and nursing staff as well as other allied health professionals. Joint consultation for selected patient groups are achieved through closed collaboration with medical and psychiatric department. Our second EMW, which was established in late 2015, provides short-stay in-patient service for more A&E patients.

Our Walk-in Clinic provides a comfortable environment for semi-urgent and non-urgent patients while waiting for consultation and treatment. The Follow-up Clinic and Fracture Clinic are set up to ensure safe discharge and continuity of care until the patient’s acute condition has resolved, or the patient is attended by specialist of other disciplines.
