Introduction

The Department of Anaesthesiology & Operating Theatre Services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) offers a comprehensive scope of services, ranging from perioperative care for elective operations, emergency operations, day surgery, outside theatre anaesthetic service, acute and chronic pain management, intensive care service, airway and resuscitation support and trauma management. It is also a major training institution in anaesthesia, pain management and intensive care in Hong Kong.

Scope of Services

Anaesthesia Care


The QEH Operating Theatre consists of 2 floors located at Block D, 2nd and 4th floor. It contains 21 operating rooms and 2 post anaesthetic care units (PACU). The Day Surgery Centre at the 5th floor of the Ambulatory Care Centre has 3 operating rooms and 1 PACU for both elective and day surgery. Another 2 operating rooms located at the 2nd floor of Block R are for radiotherapy treatment.


The Department provides perioperative service for the following specialties and subspecialties in the hospital. These include general surgery (hepatobiliary, breast, gastrointestinal, colorectal, urology, transplant (including renal and bone marrow), vascular, neonate and paediatric, head and neck, metabolic, robotic, plastic and reconstructive), orthopaedics and traumatology, obstetrics and gynaecology, neurosurgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, ophthalmology, oral maxillofacial surgery, thoracic and open heart surgery, interventional radiology, chronic pain, radiotherapy and day surgery.


It also provides outside theatre anaesthetic and sedation services for interventional radiology, cardiac catheterization and intervention, radiotherapy, obstetric epidurals, trauma patients, burn patients and ECT therapy in Kowloon Hospital.


It offers first tier support in trauma service and contributes to the central hospital resuscitation team of the hospital wide resuscitation service.


Day Surgery Anaesthesia


The Day Surgery Centre at the 5th floor of Ambulatory Care Centre provides anaesthetic service for both elective and day surgery. The Day Surgery Centre encompasses three operating rooms, one post anaesthetic care unit, a Phase 2 recovery area and a pre-anaesthetic assessment clinic.


Day Surgery Centre operates every day from Monday to Friday and a pre-anaesthetic assessment clinic operates every afternoon.


Pain Management


Acute Pain Service


The department runs an extensive acute pain service taking care of patients with moderate to severe postoperative pain. Obstetric epidural analgesia is also included under the Acute Pain Service. This service also entertains referrals for other kinds of acute pain, like acute traumatic pain or acute herpetic pain.


Chronic Pain Service


Chronic pain management team accepts referral for pain management of cancer pain and chronic non-cancer pain for both in-patients and out-patients.


Pain team will provide a holistic biopsychosocial assessment for the patients. There would be multidisciplinary management with joint collaborations from pain specialists, pain nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and clinical psychologists to formulate the best treatment strategies.


The scope of services includes:

  • Chronic pain specialist clinic
  • Chronic pain nurse clinic
  • Interventional pain management
  • Referral for allied health services of multidisciplinary team

Services Hours

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Operating Theatre provides a whole range of surgical services. They include 24 hours emergency OT services, elective (scheduled) operation in all specialties, pain management services and hospital resuscitation services.
