Kwai Chung Hospital provides comprehensive psychiatric care for the population within the catchment area of Kowloon West Cluster. Our service includes Psychiatric Inpatient service, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service, Community Psychiatric Service, Consultation Liaison Service and Early Intervention for Psychosis. Using a Recovery approach, our multi-disciplinary staff develop individualized care planning with patients and carers , while their biological, psychological, social and spiritual needs are also attended to. Through this recovery journey, we long for their mental wellness and community survival with hope and confidence.

Scope of Services

  1. Psychiatric Inpatient Servicemore details

    We receive patients from our psychiatric specialist outpatient clinics and community psychiatric outreach teams as well as the Accident and Emergency Departments of Kowloon West Cluster. Our wards are modernized with therapeutic engagement . Multidisciplinary treatment team leads by psychiatrist carry out orientation to our service, clinical assessment and observation, followed by formulating individualized treatment plan.

    • Acute Care Service - Admission to our psychiatric intensive care units is governed by the Mental Health Ordinance. The units provide a safe, modernized therapeutic environment and offer appropriate psychiatric treatment. The professional health team engages our patient and their carers to work out a care plan together that facilitates recovery and community re-integration.
       
    • Extended Care Service - Patients with more complex needs will receive entended rehabilitation programmes at our post-admission wards. The treatment team would continue and revise the treatment plan accordingly to the progress and faciliate their discharge to placement and back to community.

    It adopts a multidisciplinary approach to provide personalized, recovery-oriented psychiatric services for the person-in-recovery (PIR), enhancing the ability of self-management to their mental illnesses and facilitating social inclusion.

  3. Community Psychiatric ServiceCommunity Psychiatric Servicemore details
    • Community Psychiatric Services (CPS) comprise three tiers, namely, the Intensive Care Team (ICT), the Personalised Care Programme (PCP), and Standard Community Psychiatric Services (Standard CPS).
    • CPS is provided by a multidisciplinary team with a case management approach for service users with different level of risks and needs, and aims at promoting their mental health recovery in the community.
    • The ICT provides service across the Kowloon West Cluster, whereas the PCP and Standard CPS are provided to the population of Kwai Chung-Tsing Yi, Mong Kok/Sham Shui Po, Tsuen Wan/North Lantau, and Wong Tai Sin by four district-based teams respectively.
       
      • Intensive Care Team
        • Target service users being those having high risks and high complexity of needs
        • Provision of intensive community care including crisis intervention and assertive outreach for risk management and harm reduction
      • Personalized Care Programme
        • Target service users being those with Severe Mental Illness (SMI) having risk of frequent relapse and significant psychosocial needs
        • Provision of personalised care for the mental health and psychosocial needs with the goals of facilitating community integration and enhancing recovery
        • Foster collaboration with community partners in the district
      • Standard Community Psychiatric Services
        • Target service users being those require continuous support for maintaining stability of their mental condition and optimizing their functioning in the community
        • Provision of interventions to prevent unnecessary hospitalization and promote community integration

           

      • Extended-care Patients Intensive Treatment, Early Diversion and Rehabilitation The Stepping Stone Project (EXITERS)

        EXITERS is an inpatient services adopting a home-like environment for PIR to develop self-care skills for independent community living. PIRs will be introduced the Recovery concept. They will acquire balance growth of the recovery elements through participating in the various recovery activities. And the most important, they will identify their own personal hopes and recovery journeys with the assistance of the multi-disciplinary staff. Even after discharged, they continue to pursue their hopes and recovery.

      • Rehabilitation Activity Centre

        Rehabilitation Activity Centre is committed to provide comprehensive recovery activities aiming at facilitating PIR to overcome barriers through strengths building, with the ultimate goal of regaining a meaningful life of their own choices. We are also keen on assisting PIR to develop a support system among the PIRs, recovery team members, carers, and the community partners.

  4. Consultation Liaison Servicemore details
    • The Consultation Liaison Team aims at providing the best and comprehensive service through the integration of physical and mental health care. The Team provides Psychiatric Consultation and Liaison services to Princess Margaret Hospital, Caritas Medical Centre, Yan Chai Hospital, Kwong Wah Hospital, North Lantau Hospital, Wong Tai Sin Hospital and Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital.
       
    • Inpatient Psychiatric Consultation
      The team provides timely psychiatric consultation to patients in general hospitals who need psychiatric care, particularly for those with psychosomatic problems, psychosocial crisis and psychiatric emergencies. After psychiatric assessment, subject to patients' individual needs, follow-up management such as psychiatric admission or psychiatric outpatient treatment will be arranged accordingly.
       
    • Psychiatric Consultation at Accident & Emergency Department and the Emergency Medicine Ward
      The team is designated to provide timely psychiatric consultation to patients at the Accident & Emergency Departments and the Emergency Medicine Wards of the general hospitals. After psychiatric assessment, subject to patients' individual needs, proper follow-up management such as psychiatric admission or psychiatric outpatient treatment will be arranged accordingly.
       
    • Comprehensive Child Development Service
      Comprehensive Child Development Service is a collaboration service of the Hospital Authority, together with the Department of Health, Social Welfare Department and Education Bureau. The team provides clinical services at the Maternal and Child Health Centres, Obstetrics Clinic of Kwong Wah Hospital and Perinatal Mental Health Clinics in Kowloon West Cluster for early identification and management of mood disorders of at risk pregnant and postpartum women, such as postpartum depression. Hence, community resources can be recruited for supporting the families in need, and healthy psychosocial development of their children can be fostered. Perinatal Mental Health Clinics are located at the Specialist Outpatient Clinic of Princess Margaret Hospital and East Kowloon Psychiatric Centre.
       
    • Psychosomatic Clinics
      • Caritas Medical Centre and Psychiatric Clinic receives referrals from other departments of Caritas Medical Centre and private practitioners of Sham Shui Po district. The clinic provides outpatient care for patients with neurosis or psychosomatic illness. The clinic also provides assessment, counseling, sex therapy and treatment for patients with psychosexual problems.
      • North Lantau Hospital Psychosomatic Clinic is run by the psychiatrists of Consultation Liaison Team of Kwai Chung Hospital, serving patients with neurosis or psychosomatic illness in the Tung Chung district.

       
  5. Early Intervention Service for Psychosismore details
    • Targets early psychosis patients aged 15 to 64
    • The Early Intervention Team provides public mental health promotion, early intervention, assessment and ongoing treatment for people with psychosis. The multi-disciplinary health care team is providing an one-stop, open referral service for patients with early psychosis. Phase-specific and tailor-made treatment package for patients are delivered to minimize the long-term detrimental effects of mental illness
