Using an International Award Winning Service Model Involving Service Users, Service Providers, Volunteers and
Employers in Mental Health Recovery — The Phoenix Clubhouse

Why Clubhouse for Psychosocial Rehabilitation?

People suffering from serious mental illness need a vital and culturally sensitive community to get back to their lives. A
Clubhouse community offers members recovering from mental illness respect, hope, and the opportunity to access to the
same world of friendship, education and employment as the society. The Clubhouse approach is scientifically proven and
widely successful that includes training, accreditation and quality assurance elements that are continuously updated, and
based on the broad experience of working successfully with Clubhouse staff, members and their families. Clubhouse helps
members to unleash potential and regain confidence, dignity and self-worth by achieving their own personal goal. The
approach is successful because it is holistic, inclusive, sustaining, responsive and cost effective.

How was Phoenix Clubhouse established in Hong Kong?

The Phoenix Clubhouse (PC), established in 1998, was the first Clubhouse in Hong Kong converted from the Adult Psychiatric
Day Hospital of Western Psychiatric Centre. It follows the International Clubhouse Model with six accreditations. PC has
a total of 540 members with an average daily attendance of 55. Members attended PC are not only service users but also
peers working side by side with staff to participate in all aspects of the Clubhouse including operation, training, promotion
and research.

What are the Achievements of Phoenix Clubhouse?

PC provides a vibrant and comprehensive employment programme by collaborating with well-known international and
local firms. PC is now working with more than 20 companies and has provided 240 members with successful employment
opportunities over the years. It also has extensive partnership with over 40 volunteers to provide wellness programme,
employment opportunities, education, community integration, technical assistance and professional advices. Triumphing
their life challenges, members are empowered to advocate for mental health and anti-stigmatisation in various public media.
PC achieved extraordinary results in accreditation and has become the 11th Clubhouse International Training Base in the
world, principally focused on expanding the Chinese-speaking Clubhouse community. It has also been chosen as the place
for visit repeatedly by the panel of investigators in the process leading to the award as co-recipients of “Hilton Humanitarian
Prize to Clubhouse International and Fountain House” in 2014.
