Working smarter by paying attention to OSH

Many of our colleagues in the HA do a good job of actively promoting occupational safety and health (OSH) in their workplaces. Recently, four of them received awards in the "2nd Best OSH Employees Award Scheme". HASLink congratulates them on their achievements, and we are pleased to share some of their thoughts about OSH here.

Colleagues who received the award include: Mr Hui Kam-wah (1st from right), Ms Kwok Lai-yin (4th from right), Ms Beatrix Sin(5th from right) and Ms Wong Yin-ling (7th from right).

Apart from the OSH knowledge obtained from a one-year Registered Safety training course, I believe that from human resources management perspectives, care for our colleagues should also be the base on providing our colleagues a safe and healthy work environment. Only with such staff-centered perspective in mind, we could have a healthy and happy workforce for the provision of quality service to our patients. Through regular reporting on OSH performance and collecting feedbacks at all levels, we have brought about a triple win situation — bringing benefits to our colleagues, patients and hospitals as well.

"My colleagues frequently need to lift and transfer patients from beds and chairs. It's therefore very important for them to know about the right postures when they are doing this. Hopefully, it will increase their ability to protect themselves and avoid injuries. My OSH activities range from organising small-scale seminars on manual handling operations(MHO) and display screen equipment to consultation services on MHO injury analysis, exercises prescriptions and workplace safety assessments. All these endeavours give me a lot of satisfaction. I really appreciate the support my OSH work receives from my boss and my colleagues."

"My colleagues in the ICU can easily injure themselves, due to the nature of their jobs. So, we get together every day to do simple exercises before we start our work. Actually, some simple stretching exercises alone can effectively reduce the chance of injuries. I hope my colleagues will maintain this good habit and promote it to many others."

"I always deliver various kinds of seminar on OSH in my department. These give my colleagues opportunities to learn more about the right postures for lifting and transferring things manually as well as other OSH knowledge. In fact, we can avoid injuries if we remain just a little more alert and follow the guideline. I just hope to see my colleagues enjoying a safe working environment, as well as a reduction in the number of occupational injuries after their dedicated and diligent work daily."

The above colleagues are role models for all of us. Let's pay greater attention to OSH, and become smarter and healthier healthcare workers!
