Launching the HA's
new service culture
Have you noticed the five beautiful, five-foot-tall bears who have been standing around the entrance of HAHO recently? Who are these cute orange, red, blue, green and white creatures? Actually, they are mascots that have been specially designed to promote the HA's new service culture, which was launched during a solemn ceremony held on 20 September. Now, let's share some of that day's joyful moments.

First of all, we were deeply honoured to have Professor Chen Zhu, Minister of Health of the People's Republic of China, as our officiating guest for the ceremony, together with Dr York Chow, Secretary for Food and Health, and our Chairman and Chief Executive, Mr Anthony Wu and Mr Shane Solomon. These VIPs were joined by over 200 other participants, including staff members from our seven hospital clusters and HAHO, community partners and representatives from patient groups, to witness the launch of the new era of the HA's Vision, Mission and Values (VMV).

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Wu noted that the HA's old "VMV" was devised 18 years ago. "Society has progressed and the community's expectations about public healthcare services have changed since then. So, the HA also has to make progress and rejuvenate its service culture. At the same time, we should encourage our staff to practise what we preach by incorporating the new culture into their daily work in order to satisfy the needs of today's patients." Mr Wu's comments highlighted the reasons why we are renewing our service culture.

In his speech, Professor Chen said that, despite the community's growing demand for medical services during the past two decades, the HA and its staff have maintained high standards of service quality and safety, and they have upheld their mission to safeguard the public's health. He praised the way that the HA has extended the focus of its services to include the prevention of illness, enhanced health education for patients and their families, and emphasis on the early diagnosis and prompt treatment of diseases.

As a senior Mainland government official, Professor Chen hoped that "exchanges and communication between the mainland and Hong Kong can be further enhanced, so that we can work together to build an even better healthcare platform for our patients."

Dr Chow highlighted Hong Kong's high standards of medical services and its outstanding public healthcare system. All those working in it adhere to a philosophy of "helping people who are in urgent need and danger". They are fully dedicated to serving the community with a professional and caring attitude. The entire HA workforce has performed excellently during major public healthcare events, such as SARS and human swine influenza. Last, but not least, Dr Chow expressed his hope that our 50,000-plus staff members "will always show your professional and team-oriented spirit, and satisfy the needs of our patients with care and a strong sense of mission."

Our Chief Executive, Mr Shane Solomon, expressed his gratitude to all the HA front-line staff, executives and Board members who had been involved in the process of rejuvenating our VMV, and, of course, the VMV Working Group. Hundreds of our colleagues have contributed their collective wisdom to its contents. "Now, let's work together to bring it alive and entrench it!" he declared.

The Smart Patient Website
The ceremony also marked the launch of the Smart Patient Website (www.smartpatient.ha.org.hk). Coordinated by Health InfoWorld, this one-stop patient information website provides comprehensive patient-related and disease-based information to patients.
