Tuen Mun Hospital Community Services Centre launched the project “Sunshine Angel Student Summer Volunteer Service Program” since 2012 for those senior form secondary students aged 15 and above, DSE candidates, and university students with interest in developing their career path of health care professions in hospital setting.

All sunshine angels undergo volunteer training on patient communication and associated skills with their direct patient volunteer services.

Afterward, sunshine angels will conduct various types of volunteer services to patients in different hospital departments and out-patient clinics, e.g. health promotion activities, ward visits, as health ambassadors, conducting surveys, and story writing of successful coping stories with chronic illness for chronic ill patients, etc...

The New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) Trauma Advisory Committee, Clinical Skills Training Centre and the Department of Accident and Emergency of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) will co-organise a one-day seminar on Damage Control Treatment –Training Professionals, Helping Patients & Saving Lives on 11 August 2017 at TMH. The seminar aims to provide a platform for professionals to exchange views and share experiences in addressing damage control management and treatment and the related issues.

Tuen Mun Hospital Community Services Centre launched the project “A Special Summer Vacation – Student Summer Volunteer Service Program” since 2012 for those senior form secondary student with age over 15 and above, DSE candidates, and university students with interest in developing their career path of helping professions in hospital setting. All sunshine angels undergo volunteer training on patient communication and associated skills with their direct patient volunteer services. Afterward, sunshine angels will conduct various types of volunteer services to patients in different Tuen Mun Hospital departments, e.g. health promotion activities, ward visits, as welcome ambassadors, conducting surveys, and story writing of successful coping stories with chronic illness with elderlies, etc...On 2013, the mentor team composing of graduate sunshine angels is established for the coaching and guiding of new sunshine angels to providing care and concern to patients, as well as fostering understanding of service nature of helping professions in hospital setting. NTWC Annual Plan Briefing

2014/10/15 – NTWC Annual Plan Briefing

New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) had held its Annual Plan press conference to introduce its major initiatives in 2014/15. The press conference was held by NTWC Cluster Chief Executive Dr Tony Ko and Pok Oi Hospital (POH) Hospital Chief Executive Dr Deacons Yeung. The media was invited to visit the Combined Endoscopy Centre which has been relocated in early-2014 to enhance the concerned services at Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH).

World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week is a yearly event from 1 to 7 August which aims to raise attention and strengthen programmatic efforts in order to enable more mothers to breastfeed. To further promoting the advantages of breastfeeding, an exhibition and activity was held at atrium of Tuen Mun Hospital last week so as to educate the public by sharing concerned information and game booths.

The exhibition is now moved to M/F of Pok Oi Hospital (opposite to Shroff Office) for public’s information to 17 August.

2014/01/10 – Cantonese Opera Charity Concert 2014 of The Hospital Authority New Territories West Cluster Hospitals Charitable Trust

The Hospital Authority New Territories West Cluster Hospitals Charitable Trust has been supporting patients and families in New Territories West. The Trust has used its public donation to sponsor various patients services and medical equipments over the years. The Cantonese Opera Charity Concert 2014, held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 10 January, as greatly supported by officiating guests –Dr Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, Sir David Akers-Jones, Chairman of the NTWC Trust, Prof John C Y Leong, Chairman of Hospital Authority, Dr P Y Leung, Chief Executive of Hospital Authority and donors, artists, performers and all the community members who have come together to help those in need. The event has successfully raised over 3 million Hong Kong dollars for the needy.

An exhibition on winter surge and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) was staged from 2 Dec 2013 to 8 Dec 2013 at the atrium of Tuen Mun Hospital. The exhibition aimed to enhance public awareness of flu and VRE prevention through better personal hygiene. There was a game booth at the exhibition where participants were given a "Hand-Washing Gift Pack". Visitors and hospital staff enjoyed the game and learned the right procedure of hand-washing.

School of General Nursing, Tuen Mun Hospital Graduation Ceremony cum Scholarship Awarding Ceremony

2013/10/22 – School of General Nursing, Tuen Mun Hospital Graduation Ceremony cum Scholarship Awarding Ceremony

This was the 3rd Graduation Ceremony of School of General Nursing of Tuen Mun Hospital since its re-opening in 2008. The graduates have passed the evaluation of school with satisfactory result in both clinical and academic assessments.

Dr CHEUNG Wai-lun, Hospital Authority Director (Cluster Services) and Ms Jane LIU, Chief Manager (Nursing)/Chief Nurse Executive officiated the ceremony where they encouraged the graduates and presented them with certificates and scholarship. The graduates in return expressed their thankfulness with a song. As the School Principal, Mr K M LEE blessed students with lifelong learning and advancement on their career.

At the ceremony, Dr Albert LO, New Territories West Cluster Chief Executive, specially thanked two generous donors - the late Ms CHUNG Ming-kuen and Ms HUNG Mui, for their kind support on nurse training.

Hospital Authority Chief Executive Dr P Y Leung attended the live broadcasted show "Pre-80s Meet Post-80s" at Tuen Mun Hospital to exchange views with frontline staff during lunch hour. The topic was "Manage Your Professional Image" this time.

Patients' impression about public healthcare services comes largely from the frontline staff. As such, it is essential for healthcare workers to manage a professional image and have good communication skills on top of their medical knowledge avoid any misunderstanding.

Besides a group of NTWC staff was invited to be the speaker to share their experience on how to manage the professional image, Programme Host Ms Pang Ching of "Now TV" also joined the show to share her insights in image building.

"Pre-80s Meet Post-80s" is the interactive live broadcast programme on HA intranet and HA Channel.

New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) had held its 2013/14 Annual Plan press conference. NTWC Cluster Chief Executive Dr Albert Lo and Pok Oi Hospital (POH) Hospital Chief Executive Dr Tony Ko introduced the Cluster's key development and improvement measures in the year, as well as the hydro-pool in POH that was opened early this year. On the other hand, Yuen Long District Council members were invited to visit POH and exchange views.

2013/08/20 – Delegation from the Ministry of Health of UAE Visiting Tuen Mun Hospital

In order to have understanding on medical system and operation of the hospitals in Hong Kong, the officials from Health Ministry of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) visited Tuen Mun Hospital during their trip in Hong Kong. The delegation visited Accident and Emergency Department and Clinical Oncology Department in Tuen Mun Hospital.

2013/08/09 – Hope Foundation for Cancer Care from Taiwan visits TMH

A delegation of Hope Foundation for Cancer Care from Taiwan visited Hong Kong in order to exchange the views for revitalizing cancer patients. During the tour in Tuen Mun Hospital, the representatives visited the Department of Clinical Oncology and Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre. They were much appreciated by the services provided to the cancer patients under Hong Kong public health system.

2013/08/01 – The Board of Trustees of HACF visits Department of Physiotherapy

With the kind support of The Hospital Authority Charitable Foundation, Department of Physiotherapy of Tuen Mun Hospital procured a Robotic Assisted Therapy System for improving the physical mobility and functions of patients. The Board of Trustees visited the system and a benefited patient on 1 August to know how the system helped patients and improved their quality of life.

2013/07/23 – SFH and USFH visit NTWC

Secretary for Food and Health, Dr W M Ko and Under Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan visited New Territories West Cluster. The tour included Tin Shui Wai (Tin Yip Road) Community Health Centre, Siu Lam Hospital, Castle Peak Hospital and Tuen Mun Hospital. Dr Ko and Professor Chan visited several departments, such as General Out-patient Clinic, Psychiatry, Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, Operating Theater and Physiotherapy. Meanwhile, they attended a “Staff Forum” to have a direct dialogue with the frontline staffs. During the visit, they expressed his sympathy and solicitude to the patients with Japanese Encephalitis in Tuen Mun Hospital.

2013/07/20 – HA Community Roving Exhibition on Infection Control Awareness cum NTWC Launch Ceremony

Hospital Authority had organized a roving exhibition among Clusters from June to October to introduce the infection control measures of Hospital Authority in these years. To kick off the exhibition in New Territories West Cluster, Cluster had co-ordinated a launch ceremony at Tin Yiu Plaza in Tin Shui Wai on 20 July. Representatives of community and Department of Health were invited to join the event and signed a Hygiene Charter with Cluster Chief Executive, committing to maintain community hygiene and safeguard public health.

Apart from signing the Charter, 2 sessions of health talk were also arranged to brief people on the hand hygiene techniques and summer infectious diseases. Prize quiz and health booths such as BP and BMI measurement and health advisory services were provided for free. There was encouraging response from the public for this event.

2013/06/28 – The resonance story book : Life philosophy on coping with chronic illness

Community Services Centre of Tuen Mun Hospital invited secondary students of the district to join the activity last year. The students had visited some elderly with chronic illness, after receiving caring trainings provided by the hospital. They recorded their observations and feelings of visits in passages in April of 2013, showing the elderly’s patience during their course of illness and wisdom of life. The passages were collected and published as a resonance story book: Life philosophy on coping with chronic illness. To mark the achievement, the students and the elderly involved were invited to join a book launch which was successfully held by the Centre on 28 June 2013.

2013/05/27 – Opening Ceremony for Surgical Palliative Service in A4 Ward

Department of Surgery of Tuen Mun Hospital had setup a palliative care zone in A4 ward to facilitate terminal cancer patients. This project was kindly supported by Lions Club of Tuen Mun with $1.4 million, in sponsoring the renovation and purchase of concerned equipment.

With a more spacious ward environment, patients’ relatives can also have more time to stay with the patients. Further supporting services such as counseling, diagnosis and pain treatment will also be provided by the Department of Surgery, co-operating with the Day Hospice Centre of Department of Clinical Oncology.


Exercise Firesweeper

2013/05/24 – Exercise Firesweeper

A special emergency rescue team, formed by healthcare professionals from Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology and Department of Accident & Emergency of Tuen Mun Hospital, had conducted a joint drill with Hong Kong Police, Fire Services Department and Government Flying Service at Nim Wan in Tuen Mun.

The exercise simulated a large scale landslide under bad weather, resulting in injuries and being trapped. On-site amputation was conducted for some injuries. There were more than 30 healthcare professionals participated the exercise.

2013/05/21 – SARS Photo Exhibition cum Seminar on Infection Control

Hospital Authority had organized a photo roving exhibition among clusters, for reviewing SARS outbreak 10 years ago. New Territories West Cluster took this opportunity to invite more than 60 secondary students of the district to join the event.

The students were briefed about the SARS outbreak and introduced infection control measures of Tuen Mun Hospital, through the exhibition, isolation ward visit and infection control seminar. This enhanced their confidence in infectious diseases control of hospital, and also raised awareness to prevent such diseases.

The Grand Opening Ceremony of the Pok Oi Hospital New Building was officiated by The Honourable Donald Tsang, GBM, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on 14 February 2008. Guests who attended the Ceremony also included Dr the Honourable York Chow, SBS, JP, Secretary for Food and Health; Mr Anthony Wu, JP, Chairman of Hospital Authority and Mr Shane Solomon, Chief Executive of Hospital Authority.

2013/01/03 – TMH Breastfeeding Room Opening Ceremony 2013

The opening ceremony of the Tuen Mun Hospital Breastfeeding Room was held on 3 January 2013. Members of Tuen Mun District Council Working Group on Medical & Rehabilitation Services were invited to join this event and visit this new facility.

Breastfeeding rooms were only located at Ambulatory Care Centre and wards before. To further facilitate breastfeeding mothers, a new breastfeeding room was set up at atrium of the hospital in August 2012. The mothers are welcome to contact Hospital Foreman Office for registration and use at anytime. To enhance promotion of breastfeeding, breastfeeding room for staff use was also opened in October 2012.

2012/11/30 – Opening Ceremony of Renovated Ward & Multi-function Room Sponsored by Yan Oi Tong

To bring more love and support to long stay, terminally ill children, Yan Oi Tong had sponsored the renovation of a ward and a multi-function room at the Tuen Mun Hospital Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine ward for patients to spend their difficult or last moments with their loved ones.

With the completion of the renovation works, an opening ceremony was jointly held by Yan Oi Tong and Tuen Mun Hospital at the hospital's atrium on 30 November 2012. Dr LEUNG Pak-yin, Chief Executive of Hospital Authority and Mr David LAU, JP, District Officer (Tuen Mun) cum member of the advisory council of Yan Oi Tong, officiated the ceremony and plaque unveiling for the new facilities. The Hospital Authority and Tuen Mun Hospital expressed its heartfelt thanks to the generosity of Yan Oi Tong and its continuous support to patients in the district.


NTWC Annual Plan Media Briefing

2012/10/12 – NTWC Annual Plan Media Briefing

NTWC had held its 2012/13 annual plan press conference on 12 October. CCE Dr Albert Lo, SLH HCE Dr Eric Cheung and SLH Consultant Dr Steve Tso had briefed the media on cluster’s key development in the year, as well as the facilities in SLH. During their tour at SLH, reporters were introduced with the ceiling hoist system, and the Allied Health Training Centre which offered occupational therapy, physiotherapy, as well as Prosthetic- Orthotic services to patients.

Siu Lam Hospital is the only hospital in Hong Kong which offers comprehensive infirmary care and rehabilitation services to patients with severe intellectual disability. SLH was relocated from16 1/2Mile Castle Peak Road to a building next to Castle Peak Hospital in Tuen Mun. SLH HCE Dr Eric Cheung said the old site has already had 40-year history; While wards were crowded, facilities were also out of date. The Government granted fund for the relocation project in 2009.

To relieve the pressure brought by the high occupancy rate of O&T, a new Male O&T ward A8 was opened on 10 September 2012. Those O&T patients in ward B2 previously were transferred to ward A8 for continual care.

A roasted pork-cutting ceremony was held to unveil the opening of ward A8 on 6 September 2012. Dr Albert Lo, CCE, Dr Y Y Chow, COS(O&T) and Mr Alfred Tse, DOM(O&T) expressed sincere gratitude over the staff who continuously contributed to the team. They hope staff could ride on the present resources to provide even better service to our patients.

Elderly Commission (EC) visited the newly opened TSW (Tin Yip Road) Community Health Centre on 22 August. 20 EC members, Mr. Richard YUEN (Permanent Secretary for Food and Health (Health)) as well as representatives from Jockey Club took a glimpse at health education, RAMP (Risk Assessment and Management Programme) and GOPC operation in particular services for the elderly provided by the centre.

Members exchanged views on the development of elderly services and collaboration among government, NGOs and HA.

Five Tuen Mun District Council Members visited the newly relocated Siu Lam Hospital on 13 August 2012. The team introduced the improved facilities and environment while members have once again shown their support to the relocation project.

Thirteen Yuen Long District Council Members and Mr Yeung Tak Keung, the District Office (Yuen Long) visited the newly opened TSW Community Health Centre on 26 June.

Dr Albert Lo, CCE and Dr T W Lee, Service Director (Primary & Community Health Care) have introduced our Cluster's service development and the CHC services. The Council Members have shown the appreciation of caring services provided at TSW CHC that GOPC, Primary Care Services and Patient Education services have been enhanced.


Delegation from the Ministry of Health of Mongolia Visiting TMH & CPH

2012/05/29 – Delegation from the Ministry of Health of Mongolia Visiting TMH & CPH

The 16 members of the delegation are the top management of the Central Hospitals and different health departments. The focus of the study tour was on hospital governance.

They visited TMH and CPH to learn the governance, structure and operation at an acute hospital and a rehabilitation/community hospital respectively on 29 May 2012. Four of our HGC members - Mr Paul YU, BBS, MBE, JP (TMH HGC Chairman), Mr CHAN How-chi (TMH HGC member), Mr Michael CHAN Kee-huen (TMH HGC member) and Mr LEE Hung-sham (CPH HGC member) - attended the seminar and shared their views on the role and importance of community leaders taking part in governing public hospitals. The NTWC Top Team had also illustrated the focus with our guidelines and practices.


Daya Bay Nuclear Drill

2012/04/27 – Daya Bay Nuclear Drill

A two day drill (26-27 April 2012) led by The Security Bureau imitated that people injured in the Daya Bay Nuclear incident were sent to Hong Kong for further treatment. The ERTC (Emergent Radiation Treatment Centre) in TMH was the designated treatment centre.

All staff entering the Radiation Emergency Area were in proper protective gear and with pocket dosimeters for monitoring of radiation exposure. Upon completion of handling all contaminated patients, Medical Physicist on site checked if there was any secondary radioactive contamination of staff members and the proper labeling and disposal of the patient belongings and contaminated staff clothing.


Chinese painting exhibition by Mr Lee Kit Leung

2012/03/26 – Chinese painting exhibition by Mr Lee Kit Leung

Cancer Patient Mr Lee Kit Leung is an optimist. He likes painting very much and always engages himself in various activities, though his life may end any time. The Department of Oncology has organized a painting exhibition him in March. Family, friends and TMH staff of over 50 people attended the opening ceremony while many visitors and patients were interested in his masterpiece. Mr Lee would like to encourage others to adopt a positive outlook on life.
