Introduction


Tung Wah Hospital (TWH) is a sub-acute hospital in the Hong Kong West Hospital Cluster. The Department of Surgery plays a very important role in providing both acute and extended care surgical services. A wide range of multi-specialty services of the highest possible standard are accessible to the community. To achieve a seamless health care system, we work closely with the Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital. The abundance of clinical material of a general nature also makes our department renowned as an excellent teaching unit for medical students and surgical trainees.

    Scope of Service


To provide multi-specialty high-quality medical care, Department of Surgery of TWH is organized into the following divisions,

In addition, we have a general surgical team that caters for general surgical problems of inpatients and outpatients. A wound care team has been established to facilitate rehabilitation of patients with wound problems.

Day surgery service in Tung Wah Hospital commenced in November 1995. It aims to provide a safe, efficient and comfortable day surgery service for the local population. It is the major day surgery service in the Hong Kong Island West and its staff is fully trained in the day surgery practice. It is also a teaching centre for ambulatory surgery of the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong.

To deliver safe, efficient and quality day surgery services.  

The centre is located on the tenth floor of the Centenary Building. It has a reception, a waiting area, two consulation rooms, two well-equipped operating theatres, one endoscopy unit, a recovery bay and one seminar room.

 

The DSC provides day case surgeries under general anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, intra-venous sedation or local anaesthesia of the following specialties:

  • General Surgery

  • Breast Surgery

  • Endocrine Surgery

  • Hepatobiliary Surgery

  • Colorectal Surgery

  • Plastic Surgery

  • Ear, Nose & Throat

  • Vascular Surgery

The Centre runs a pre-anaesthesia assessment clinic for patients requiring general or regional anaesthesia. A 24-hour telephone helpline is available for patients who have any queries either before or after operation. A telephone follow-up service is provided to patient after operation.

The Centre also runs two unique services

In these services, patients can be referred by the general practitioners or general outpatient clinics to the Day Surgery Centre for treatment without going through the hospital specialist outpatient clinic. These service aim to provide a safe, convenient and fast-track service to patients with simple surgical diseases.

Examples of operations performed under general or regional anaesthesia include:

1. Hernia repair

2. Excision of breast lumps

3. Circumcision

4. Excision of larger / deep cutaneous lesions

5. Fistulotomy / haemorrhoidectomy / other peri-anal procedures

6. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

7. Trendelenburg operation of varicose veins 


    Ear, Nose and Throat Centre (ENT Centre)go to top

The dedication of the ENT Centre is to provide specialist care for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of common as well as highly complicated ENT disorders in our patients. The ENT Centre maintains a state of art of care for patients with diseases of the ear, nose and throat and patients with head and neck cancers.

1. The ENT team comprises of experienced ENT specialists, ENT nurses and professional paramedical staff. Our audiologists are particularly experienced in the assessment and management of hearing problems and balance and inner ear disorders.

2. There are 4 consultation rooms, a Voice and Laryngeal Disorders Laboratory, treatment room ENT day surgery service, a well-equipped audiology suite to conduct hearing tests and an advanced vestibular assessment laboratory to conduct balance tests.

3. The conference room is used for patient counselling, medical teaching and academic research.

In view of the increasing prevalence rate of incontinence and urinary disorder among Hong Kong population, causing a certain level of physiological, psychological and social impact to them as well as to their carers.

With the adequate support from the executive board of TWHGHs, C5 ward was converted into a modern center for patient with urology problems on MARCH 2001. Run by experienced specialists and nurses, providing urology specialist services, like investigations, diagnostic tests, treatments, education services. Aim to provide high quality, comprehensive and holistic care for the individuals who have urology diseases.

The increasing prevalence rate of breast diseases in Hong Kong population has caused certain level of physiological, psychological and social impact to both clients as well as to their carers. To respond this challenge, C5 Breast Centre was established in March 2001with the full support from the Executive Board of TWHGHs. The Centre is run by the full team of experienced breast specialists and breast nurses who aim to provide high quality and comprehensive breast specialist services and holistic care for the individuals with breast diseases.
