Introduction

Siu Lam Hospital was officially opened on 28 June 1972. It is the only hospital under the Hospital Authority providing infirmary services for patients with severe intellectual disability aged 16 or above.

The hospital mission is to provide professional, high quality and specialised intellectual disability services to patients and their carers through multi-disciplinary team participation, community collaboration, training and research. All aims to enhance patients' social inclusion, safeguard their rights and improve their quality of life.

There are eleven wards in total and two specially designed centres for training and rehabilitation in the hospital, namely the 'Severe Intellectual Disability Activity Centre of Excellence (SIDACE)' and the 'Allied Health Training Centre'.

All wards are spacious, well ventilated and comfortable. They are all structurally designed and well equipped with patient-centred facilities such as ceiling hoist and audio-visual equipment to provide quality care to patients. There are 3 beds for urgent short-term hospital placement for the patients under Central Waiting List if necessary.

The SIDACE is established to provide rehabilitation services to maximise patients' potentials and to improve patients' quality of life. There is a training room on each floor of the building to provide daily rehabilitative programmes, trainings and social activities. There are also two multisensory rooms to provide therapeutic sensory stimulations to proactively draw patients' attention to acquire meaningful interactions with the surroundings.

The Allied Health Training Centre offers occupational therapy, physiotherapy and prosthetic and orthotic services to the patients. The team works closely with the doctors, nurses, dietitians and medical social workers. Through multidisciplinary professional inputs, we endeavor to provide the best services to our patients.
