Introduction

Our department was established in 1972. It is situated from the 2nd to 7th of Block J of the Hospital.

The Department provides multiple subspecialty psychiatry services through six clinical teams:

  • General Psychiatry Team 1
    (including Consultation Liaison, Substance Abuse Service & Comprehensive Child Development Service)
  • General Psychiatry Team 2
  • Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Team
  • Community Psychiatry Team
  • Psychogeriatric Team
  • Early Psychosis Team

The Department also provides extensive consultation liaison service to other departments in Queen Mary Hospital and the cluster hospital.

We have outreaching services to old age homes, hostels for mental handicapped, Education Department and non-government organisations which provides community services to mental patients. The Department has a long tradition of providing care by a multidisciplinary approach and team members include psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, medical social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, Red Cross School teachers and clinical psychologists.

In line with the regionalization of medical services in Hong Kong, the Department provides comprehensive service to the Central, Western, Southern regions (West of Aberdeen Tunnel) of Hong Kong, as well as the outlying islands (except Town Chung New Twon).

The department also has close collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry, University of Hong Kong in providing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical research.

The Western Psychiatric Centre is incorporated to the Department from 1 October 1993. It is situated in a community rehabilitation centre which is about 15 minutes of drive from the Queen Mary Hospital. It comprises an array of community psychiatry facilities.

The outpatient clinic provides follow up treatment for discharged patients. It also receives new referrals from doctors in both public and private sector. Apart from outpatient consultation sessions, the clinic also organizes talks and seminars on mental health for the patients, carers and the public.

The Psychogeriatric Day Hospital and the Phoenix Clubhouse are both ambulatory services. They are described in more detail in other sections in the website.

The Community Psychiatry Team of the Department serves patients who require intensive support in community living. Home visit and outreaching services will be provided if necessary. It also has close liaison and working relationship with the Social Welfare Department other non-government organizations which provide psychiatric rehabilitation facilities in the community, e.g. halfway houses, intergrated community centre for mental wellness (ICCMW). The Team also provides outreaching assessment for people who are suspected to have mental illness but are not willing to attend a clinic.

Clinical Services

General Adult

  1. General Adult Services (Patient age range: 18-64) are provided by two General Psychiatry Team 1 & 2
  2. General Psychiatry Team 1 including consultation liaison services, comprehensive child development service (CCDS) and substance abuse services
  3. General Psychiatry Team 2 including sleep disorder
  4. Consultation-liaison services is also provided to A&E, other in-patient wards in QMH and the cluster hospitals.
  • Outpatient:
    1. Outpatient clinics are located at Western Psychaitric Centre, 3/F, South Wing of David Trench Rehabilitation Centre and 2/F Block J at Queen Mary Hospital
  • In-patient:
    1. Female and male beds of General Psychiatry Team 1 & 2 are allocated in Ward J6 and J7 respectively
  • Substance Abuse Services:
    1. To provide pharmacological and psychological treatment to patients suffering from substance abuse disorder comorbid with other psychiatric disorder

Child & Adolescent

  1. Patient age range: 17 or below
  • Outpatient:
    1. Outpatient clinic is located at 5/F, Block J at QMH
  • In-patient:
    1. Inpatient beds of Child & Adolescent are allocated in Ward J4
  • Psychiatric Child & Adolescent Day Centre:
    1. There are 18 day patients quota for this Day Centre which is located at 5/F, Block J, QMH.
      Service Provisions are:
      • Individual Assessment and multidisciplinary training group service are available at the Day Centre.
      • Training groups are specially designed for patients with ADHD (Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder), ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), ED (Eating Disorder) and TS (Tourette’s syndrome) etc.
      • Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8:45am to 5:30pm.
    2. There would be C&A Day Service extension at TSAN Yuk Hospital 4W commenced on 4th September 2017.
      • Nurse Assessment Clinic for triage cases and complex cases and neurodevelopmental cases.
      • Various group training and community education / training programs for C&A patients would be relocated to TYH from QMH.
      • Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8:45am to 5:30pm.

Community Psychiatry

  1. Community psychiatric service provides supervision and support to the patient living in the community. It is also provided crisis intervention services to support mental illness in the community
  • Outpatient:
    1. Outpatient clinic is located at the Western Psychaitruc Centre, 3/F, South Wing of David Trench Rehabiliation Centre
  • In-patient:
    1. Female and male beds are allocated in Ward J6 and J7 respectively.
  • Day Hospital:
    1. Day services is provided by Phoenix Clubhouse which is located at 1/F of North Wing of David Trench Rehabilitation Centre)
    2. Referral to the Phoenix Clubhouse should be sent to team head of the Community Psychiatry Team for assessment

Psychogeriatrics

Target clients are elderly over 65 suffering from mental disorder

  • Outpatient:
    1. Outpatient clinics are located at the Western Psychaitric Centre, 3/F, South Wing of David Trench Rehabilitation Centre.
  • In-patient:
    1. Male and female beds of Psychogeriatric are allocated in Ward J4.
    2. Patient can be admitted through Western Psychiatric Center, AED or general wards of QMH or from outreached Care and Attention Home (C&A Home) / Private Old Aged Home (POAH) directly.
    3. Aimed at managing the acute psychiatric problem or short-term social issue of elderly over 65.
  • Elderly Suicide Prevention Programme (ESPP):
    1. This programme aims for early intervention of the elderly who are at risk of suicide in the community. It provides services including home visit by ESPP nurse, medical consultation at Fast Track Clinic, counselling, telecheck and hotline services (ESPP Hotline Service Tel.: 2517 8149)
    2. Target clients are elderly over 65 with depression and/or suicidal idea / attempt referred after ward consultation or form other specialities, GP and the community elderly service organizations
    3. The Fast Track Clinic appointment is arranged in WPC
    4. The home visit, counselling and hotline services are free of charge. The medical consultation at Fast Track Clinic is charged as psychiatric outpatient clinic
  • Day Hospital (PGDH):
    1. Day Hospital is located at the 2/F of South Wing, David Trench Rehabilitation Centre (David Trench Rehabilitation Centre) and 18 beds are allocated
    2. All referred in-patients will be screend by AC / Consultant in ward
    3. For out-patient referral, the referral should be sent to PGDH for screening
    4. Aimed at providing day time treatment and rehabilitation of psychiatric illness of elderly over 65
    5. Cases would be reviewed by CMO regularly and discussed in regular monthly meeting
  • Outreaching Services to C&A Home and POAH:
    1. Psychogeriatric Team provides outreaching consultation services to the residents over 65 in C&A Home and POAH who are suffering from mental disorder
  • Consultation-liaison services to general wards of QMH and geriatric ward of FYKH:
    1. Consultation-liaison service is provided to the patients over 65 in general wards of QMH and geriatric ward of FYKH who need psychiatric management
    2. Urgent consultation to patient over 65 in general wards of QMH will be provided by psychogeriatric team during office hour after the case is discussed with AC/Consultant
    3. Urgent consultation to patient over 65 in AED/QMH will be provided by psychogeriatric team during office hour

Early Psychosis

  • Outpatient:
    1. Age Range is 15-64
    2. The team takes referral for first episode of psychotic disorders
    3. Early Psychosis worker will contact the patient to arrange for further assessment
    4. Early Psychosisteam doctor will screen and take over the patient if the patient is found suitable. The patient would normally be seen within ONE week.
    5. Early Psychosis clinic is located at J2, QMH
