About us

The Department of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia (DCA) is the only Specialist Cardiothoracic Anaesthetic Department in the whole of Hong Kong. It moved from its earlier location at Grantham Hospital to its present location at Queen Mary Hospital in July 2008, along with the Departments of Cardiothoracic Surgery (CTSD) and Paediatric Cardiology (DPC) during the relocation of the Cardiothoracic Services.

DCA

The name “Department of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia (DCA)” was coined at the time of relocation to acknowledge its separate status from the Department of Anaesthesia that was already in existence and which constitutes the larger department of Anaesthesia in Queen Mary Hospital. As the name signifies, DCA provides anaesthesia and related services exclusively in the spheres of cardiac and thoracic surgery, and related intensive care, and now increasingly for adult cardiology as well as adult congenital heart diseases.

Service

QMH is the oldest of the 4 cardiac surgical centres in Hong Kong, and the only centre for thoracic and heart and lung transplantation, and long-term mechanical circulatory support services.
