Simulation Training

Advanced Surgical Trauma Course

The Advanced Surgical Trauma Course (ASTC) is a two-days training with a series of lectures, simulation, skills stations and hands-on workshop on "Golden Hour" and different phrases of trauma & surgical management. The course was first introduced in May 2013, and it is co-organized by various hospital departments including Accident & Emergency, Anaesthesiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Radiology & Imaging and Surgery. This course is designed to improve the coordination, team work and management of emergency situations in the trauma team.

Departmental Medication Safety Training

The scenario-based simulation training program of medication safety is designed for doctors and nurses in various departments, including Medical, Paediatrics, Surgical and Intensive Care Unit. The training allows participants to have better understanding and familiarization of the HA medication guidelines and protocols, and hands-on practice on the use of In-patient Medication Order Entry (IPMOE) system.

Extracorporeal Membranous Oxygenation (ECMO) Simulation Training and Critical Management Course

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a mechanical treatment which provides support to patients with cardiac and respiratory problem. The system was increasingly used in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) & Coronary Care Unit (CCU) since the 2009 swine-flu pandemic and the establishment of ECMO centres in 2010. This training was designed by collaborative group of experienced intensivists and nurses, which aims to equip HA staff on the technical skills of ECMO application, trouble-shooting of common problems that relate to ECMO machines, and the transportation and retrieval of ECMO patient in a team approach. Another Critical Management Course is introduced in 2019 to provide training on critical management of ECMO, and to enable doctors & nurses to advance their competencies in managing complex ECMO cases. This course also covers the new service models on the provision of ECMO service in HA hospitals.

Neonatal Resuscitation Workshop

This program aims to equip the neonatal medical and nursing teams with the skills and knowledge of newborn resuscitation. The training also helps to facilitate resuscitation in simulated environments, such as delivering suite and neonatal intensive care unit.

Obstetrics Emergency Workshop

The program is designed to demonstrate techniques of conducting a delivery, reviewing the basic concepts of new born resuscitation and updating recent changes in the resuscitation guideline. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen their skills of managing obstetric emergencies.

Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) Workshop

This program is designed to allow participants to understand the major risk factors and causes of postpartum haemorrhage and practice the emergency management and treatment of the condition. The course content includes the increase of awareness and the provision of theoretical knowledge on management of PPH. The course also aims to facilitate a team approach on the management of PPH.

Respiratory Failure Management Course

This course is designed to equip the newly recruited doctors and nurses who are working in medical and surgical departments, with the practical skills and updated knowledge which to enable them to carry out their clinical duties in the management of to manage respiratory failure for patients put on invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) or non-invasive ventilation (NIV). Skills training station and multiple simulation scenarios were designed with focuses focused on basic principles of setting up IMV/NIV, capacity for simple trouble shooting, detection of complications associated with IMV/NIV. Quality and Safety issues regarding including infection control and patient transfer were also developed to facilitate a team approach in managing patients with different mode of mechanical ventilation.
