Department profile

We provide management of speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders to inpatients and outpatients with an aim to maximize their communication and swallowing abilities and improve their quality of life. Through individual therapy, group therapy and joint clinics / programmes with other clinical specialties such as videofluoroscopic study of swallowing, flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, voice clinic, stroke programme and cochlear implant programme, speech therapists provide assessment and treatment to patients with the following problems:

  • Adult and paediatric swallowing disorders
  • Neurogenic communication disorders: aphasia, dysarthria, dyspraxia and cognitive communication disorder
  • Laryngectomy or tracheostomy
  • Speech disorders secondary to head and neck surgery or radiotherapy
  • Voice disorders
  • Hearing disorders and cochlear implant
  • Stuttering
  • Paediatric speech and language delay or disorders

Points to note for patients

Booking Procedures for New Cases

We do not accept appointment booking by phone. Please come in person with the original copy of the following documents or fax them to 3505 4773 to make an appointment:

  • A doctor's referral letter issued within the last 3 months
  • HKID card or birth certificate for children
  • Residential address information, e.g. electricity bill, water bill

Notice for outpatients

  • On the appointment day, please pay at the shroff on G/F, Li Ka Shing Specialist Outpatient Clinics (North Wing). Then submit your appointment slip to our reception counter and wait at the waiting hall patiently.
  • Your appointment will be cancelled if you are late for over 15 minutes upon submission of the paid appointment slip. Please reserve sufficient time for payment and submission of appointment slip.
  • If your appointment is at 5pm, please settle payment before 4:45pm when the shroff closes.
  • Please inform us as early as possible if you are unable to attend your appointment.
  • Your case file will be closed if you have defaulted your appointment and do not contact us within 28 days, or defaulted appointment without prior notice for 2 times, or changed appointment for 2 consecutive times. Once your case file is closed, a new doctor's referral is required for a new appointment and you have to pay new case fees.
  • Please inform us as soon as possible of any changes in your contact information.
  • Our clinic will be closed when Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above, ˇ§Extreme Conditionˇ¨ or Black Rainstorm warning signal is issued. Affected patients should contact us within 28 days for appointment rescheduling.
  • We do not accept appointment rescheduling by phone. Please come to the department in person during office hours, or fax your appointment slip to 3505 4773 (write your fax number and "reschedule" on the slip), or mail it to us (write "reschedule" on the slip and enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope).
  • For calls made via telephone extensions of our hospital, the number 3505 6000 will be displayed. Please answer the calls.
