Intensive Care Unit
The KWH Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the first of its kind in Hong Kong, was established in 1968. It is also one of 15 critical intensive care centres in the territory.
The KWH ICU is located on 5/F, East Wing, with 13 beds and an isolation room in support of critical adult patients requiring intensive treatment and care in all specialties of the KWH, including internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, orthopaedics, neurology, gynaecology and obstetrics.
All medical personnel in the ICU have received specialist training. They make use of the advanced facilities and their profound expertise to provide diagnosis and continuous monitoring as well as suitable intensive treatment and care for the patients.
ICU is mainly responsible for treatment and support of patients suffering severe organ failure and critical conditions, such as failure of organs like the heart/lungs/kidneys, major trauma, post-operative monitoring and care for major surgeries, and early detection and prevention of various complications.
Our medical team also collaborates with other healthcare units, including Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology, Infection Control, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics and Chaplaincy, to provide quality, holistic treatment and care for the patients.
We also run an outreach service, such as CPR support for patients in non-clinical departments and visits to ex-ICU patients.
On the other hand, we strive to maintain good communication with the patients’ relatives. For patients nearing the end of their lives, we would discuss with their family members to arrange for a peaceful passing, uphold the patients’ dignity and help the relatives cope with this time of grieving.
