Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics

Hong Kong is facing the problem of an aging population and hence a rising incidence of diabetes and degenerative pain (such as plantar fasciitis, bunion). Many patients are in need of orthotic devices (orthotic insoles, ankle-foot orthosis, etc.), while some diabetic patients require prosthetic limbs due to amputation.

Prosthetics and Orthotics is a professional healthcare service accessible by referral from doctors.

In prosthetics, careful assessment is conducted by the prosthetist, who will design, produce and assemble prosthetic limbs to replace the lost ones by taking account of individual needs of the patient. Various details must be fine-tuned to perfection given the patient’s physique, proportions and connection points, for the new “limbs” to fulfil their function and aid patients in their daily lives.

In orthotics, we will customise orthotic devices for patients to correct deformed joints, fix the joint in place or protect the joint for pain alleviation and enhancement of physical function. As the affected limbs remain intact, a lot of care must be exercised during the design process.

We work closely with orthopaedists, other specialist doctors, physiotherapists and nurses, committed to helping patients of different age and physical conditions improve their limb functions and quality of life.
