With advances in technology, many laboratory procedures have become automated. Automation not only improves efficiency to a great extent, it also enhances accuracy and precision of laboratory results reported by pathologists and medical laboratory technologists. The Pathology team makes use of professional knowledge to validate each laboratory report with appropriate quality control of laboratory procedures, providing quality patient service.

Clinical Pathology Department has been accredited by Hong Kong Accreditation Service under the Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme since 2011.

Clinical Pathology is a medical specialty that studies the cause and nature of various diseases. Clinical Pathology Department of a hospital is responsible for analysis of blood, urine, secretion, histological and cytological specimens etc, in order to provide crucial information for clinical diagnosis and management of disease. Clinical Pathology Department is comprised of different sub-specialties including Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Clinical Microbiology, and Anatomical Pathology; each sub-specialty is responsible for different scope of laboratory diagnostic work.

Clinical Pathology Department of Kwong Wah Hospital has a history of more than 50 years. It provided laboratory services to Tung Wah Eastern Hospital and Tung Wah Hospital in early years. The department now serves both in-patients and out-patients of Kwong Wah Hospital. There are currently 13 pathologists, 84 medical laboratory technologists, 54 supporting staff and operation assistants. Each year the department handles 600-700 thousand of blood specimens, about 240 thousand of microbiological specimens, 300 autopsy cases, 20 thousand of surgical specimens and 55 thousand of cytological specimens in which 40 thousand of them are sent from Well Women Clinic of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. Clinical Microbiology team provides Mycobacteriology laboratory service to all Kowloon Central Cluster hospitals. It handles about 370 thousand of Mycobacteriology culture per annum.
