Introduction:
 

Tung Wah Hospital (TWH) was founded upon the enactment of the ˇ§Tung Wah Hospital Incorporation Ordinanceˇ¨ on 26 March 1870. Since 1 October 1991, the management of TWH was transferred from the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) to the Hospital Authority (HA). As at 31 March 2015, TWH had 550 beds; 62 rehabilitation day and geriatric day places. TWH admits patients from its Specialist Outpatient Clinic. Also, it accepts transfer of patients from Queen Mary Hospital (QMH).

  • To be a responsible and responsive hospital service provider through the promotion of efficiency, cost effectiveness, staff dedication and community participation.
  • To collaborate with other healthcare providers, social service agencies and cluster partners in maximizing the hospital benefits to the local community.
  • To maintain and sustain Tung Wahˇ¦s tradition of providing medical attention to those in need so that no one is denied from obtaining adequate medical attention due to a lack of means.

   
Recent Improvements or Development:
 

  1. Enhancement of Day Surgery and Same Day Surgery
    The Hong Kong West Clusterˇ¦s only day surgery centre is located in Tung Wah Hospital (TWH). To meet the growing service demand, the target of extra 500 day and same day operations would be conducted in TWH in 2014/15 and the same would be done in subsequent years. As at 31 March 2015, extra 674 day and same day operations were performed in TWH.

  2. Replacement of Fencing Wall and Setting Up of a New Guard House at the Main Entrance
    With the generous donation of $2.65 Millions by Tung Wah Board, the fencing is replaced and a new guard house is set up at the main entrance in order to provide a new image to the public.

  3. Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine Pilot Programme
    In response to the policy direction of the Government, HA is collaborating with the tripartite TWGHs Chinese Medicine Centres for Training and Research to launch the Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine (ICWM) Pilot Programme for HA patients. This Pilot Programme aimed to explore feasibility and gain experience via small-scale pilots in order to develop an ICWM model. TWH joined this programme and started to provide eligible stroke patients with Chinese Medicine treatment on 22 September 2014.

  4. The College of American Pathologists (CAP) Accreditation for Siu King Chung Pathology Laboratory
    The Accreditation Committee of the CAP has awarded accreditation to the hospital pathology services based on results of a recent on-site inspection in December 2014. Our Pathology Laboratory passed the first accreditation inspection with excellent results.

  5. TWH as the Training Centre under the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists
    The Department of Anaesthesia of TWH had performed up to the requirement of the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists in their accreditation inspection in late 2014. TWH would continue to be an accredited training centre for coming 5 years starting from 1 January 2015.

  6. 6. Jockey Club Healthy City Community Projects ˇV ˇ§Good Communityˇ¨ Programme: Age-friendly Central & Western District
    TWH has been awarded the Jockey Club Healthy City Community Projects ˇV ˇ§Good Communityˇ¨ Programme: Age-friendly Central & Western District in December 2014. The award was voted by the senior citizens in the Central and Western District.

1984 Set up Stroke Rehabilitation Ward to provide treatment to those stroke patients
1991 The management of Tung Wah Hospital was transferred to the Hospital Authority
1993 Set up Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Centre
1994 Provided cochlear implant service
1995 Established Day Rehabilitation Centre and Occupational Therapy Unit
1996 Provided day surgery service
1999 Set up ambulatory diagnostic service and geriatric urology service
2000 Enhanced the community reintegration programme for rehabilitation patients
2001 Established 2 surgical day centres ˇV Geriatric Urology Centre, Breast Centre to provide one-stop diagnostic and treatment services
2002 Established Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre to provide diagnostic and treatment services
2003 Set up medical day centre equipped with a Geriatric Day Hospital, a Diabetes Service Clinic and a Clinical Diagnostic Unit to provide comprehensive geriatric day service
2006
  • Provided the Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine treatment services to inpatients at the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Sophia Wang Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Treatment Centre
  • The Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Day Centre introduced new services - laryngology, rhinitis, dizziness rehabilitation and radiofrequency ENT surgery
2007 Set up a Renal Centre and a Renal Research Centre
2009 Set up Sleeping and Breathing Surgical Centre and the Nurse Continence Clinic at the General Outpatient Clinic
2011 Established an Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Constipation Clinic at Specialist Outpatient Department
2012 Set up a bone density assessment service
2013 Tung Wah Hospital has been awarded full accreditation status for four years by the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards
2014
  • Joined the ICWM programme and provided eligible stroke patients with Chinese Medicine treatment in collaboration with TWGHs
  • Established Quality & Safety Office to enhance quality and safety service in the hospital
