Grantham Hospital is a specialist hospital providing comprehensive medical treatment of heart and lung diseases in Hong Kong. Located on a hillside at Wong Chuk Hang in Aberdeen, Grantham Hospital enjoys a green and quiet environment. Opened in 1957, Grantham Hospital was formerly operated by the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association (Chinese Big 5 only). In 1982 it turned into a cardiothoracic centre. Joining the Hospital Authority since 1991, Grantham Hospital has become a tertiary referral centre for treatment of heart and lung diseases with 395 beds and about 550 staff. Apart from providing 24-hour service for emergency cardiac catheterisation and cardiac interventional procedures, the Hospital also works closely with the surgical and medical departments of the University of Hong Kong as an institute of research and education in specialized cardiothoracic field, alongside training up Enrolled Nurses as stipulated by the Secretary for Food and Health.
During the past five decades, Grantham Hospital has evolved to provide specialist service in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac medicine, cardiac paediatrics, tuberculosis, chest medicine and cardio-pulmonary infirmary. In 2003 and 2004, palliative medicine and acute geriatrics service were set up respectively in the Hospital to render more comprehensive patient care service. Day care service for cardiac catheterisation and related procedures, comprehensive rehabilitation service for cardiac and chest patients in the community and outreaching palliative care service for cancer patients in Hong Kong Island are provided. To optimize the provision of cardiac surgical services particularly in the management of high risk heart patients with significant co-morbidities in the Hong Kong West Cluster of the Hospital Authority, the Cardiac Anaesthesia, Cardiac Paediatrics and Cardiothoracic Surgery services were relocated to Queen Mary Hospital by phases starting from late July 2008. With its Cardiac Medicine and associated cardiac catheterisation laboratory service remaining, Grantham Hospital will keep performing quality cardiac diagnostic and interventional procedures on patients not requiring open heart surgical support. While upholding its role as a major heart and chest hospital, Grantham Hospital will continue to excel in its geriatric, palliative and rehabilitative medicine services. The Hospital works closely with the University of Hong Kong to provide specialist training. In addition, on-going post-basic specialty training programmes are conducted for own nurses and relevant nursing staff from other hospitals in the Hospital Authority and other institutes e.g. Courses on Cardiac Catheterisation Nursing. Furthermore, the School of General Nursing has been re-opened in 2008 to educate and train up Enrolled Nurses. In partnership with the community, Grantham Hospital jointly promotes heart/chest health with other agencies. It organises health talks and other health promotion activities. As a tertiary referral centre, Grantham Hospital undertakes innovative research projects to the benefit of the scientific and medical community and strives for continuous quality breakthroughs.
