Every year, organ donors save lives and help patients in critical medical need by agreeing to donate their heart, lung, liver, kidney, bone, cornea and / or skin after they pass away. Department of Health reveals that, as of December 2015, around 2,450 patients are waiting for organ transplant. Top on the list are patients waiting for kidneys, followed by cornea, liver and heart. Statistics also shows that the number of patients waiting for transplant exceeds that of donated organ / tissue. For example, there were only 81 donors (including deceased or living donors) for kidney; but around 1,900 patients are waiting for kidney transplant. Besides, as of 15 July, the Hong Kong Centralised Organ Donation Register (CODR) has only about 210,000 people on the list.

The Government’s Organ Donation Promotion Charter aims to raise awareness of organ donation. HA fully supports the initiative by encouraging the public to register as donors. To make registration process as easy as possible, HA has created a QR code that links to the registration page of the CODR website. From there, one can simply enter a few personal details and join the registry of potential donors.

From now till the end of 2016, various HA hospitals and outpatient clinics will set up promotion booths manned by volunteers who will brief colleagues and visitors on organ donation and help them register on site. Those who register at these booths will receive a limited edition HA pin as a token of thanks for their selfless act. They will also have a chance to take cute photos using funny oversized organ props, upload the photos to their facebook, instagram or other social media platforms and encourage family, friends and colleagues to echo support to the registration campaign.

Colleagues will learn more about organ donation through a web-based game later on the HA intranet (http://ha.home).It will be fun, don’t miss it!
