Dr Chu has been a specialist urological surgeon at Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) since 2006. While treating a number of ketamine abusers, she noticed that they often suffered from severe lower urinary tract symptoms, including a very frequent and urgent need to urinate and urge incontinence. Keen to learn more, she began to investigate the clinical characteristics, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of lower urinary system dysfunction among these patients.

Her groundbreaking discoveries in this area have aroused our Government's concern and international awareness about the dangers of ketamine abuse. In fact, Dr Chu's research contributed to the Department of Justice's new guideline for sentencing drug traffickers. She has also received HK$1.3 million from the Beat Drugs Fund to study the urological consequences of chronic ketamine abuse.

Dr Chu has given numerous lectures about urology to nurses and doctors, and she was instrumental in the establishment of an annual urology nursing fund by the Hong Kong Urological Association to promote international recognition of Hong Kong's urology nurses.

Dr Chu is pleased to have been chosen as an Outstanding Staff Member. She regards it as great recognition for the work being done by herself and her team members.

"It's very important to have a strong team spirit, as well as enthusiasm and openness. I not only work with my colleagues in the TMH Urology Divison, but also with doctors and nurses in other hospitals. I am just a one small player in a very large team," she says humbly.

Her constant passion to discover root causes has contributed to Dr Chu's success in her important work. She hopes that she and her colleagues will continue to make further progress in their endeavours.

"I always remember two mottos the principal of my secondary school taught us: 'Do your ordinary work extraordinarily well', and 'Duty is its own reward'. I hope all of you will feel the same as me about them." This is the message Dr Chu wishes to share with everyone.
