Multi-sensory rehabilitation garden cheers up child patients

On the opening day of the rehabilitation garden, several doctor dogs arrived to visit the children. The Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital at Sandy Bay (DKCH) is committed to caring for children who require long-term ventilation as well as those with complex medical needs that necessitate rehabilitation. Recently, the hospital celebrated the official opening of its new rehabilitation garden, which was co-created by a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and clinical psychologists. Its primary aim is to offer long-term hospitalised children a healing space where they can immerse themselves in nature, enjoy sunlight, and breathe fresh air.

The garden integrates elements such as the forest, sky, and ocean to provide a rich, multi-sensory experience. Textured pebble walls and glass bead walls enhance tactile stimulation, allowing children to engage meaningfully with their surroundings. Additionally, interactive features such as colourful metallophones and steering wheels can encourage children to strengthen their muscles through various movements, including striking, raising their hands, and touching as they play. Aromatic herbs are also included to stimulate their sense of smell. Handrails are installed along both sides of the barrier-free garden paths to support walking exercises for children with muscle weakness or spasticity. This space allows children and their families to enjoy family time and outdoor strolls during visiting hours.

In the future, the hospital will hold various activities in the garden, such as doctor pet visits, to bring laughter to the children. The rehabilitation garden not only improves the medical environment for the children but also serves as a rest station on their road to recovery, helping them relieve their emotional stress and promote overall well-being.

The ground design is inspired by Zentangle patterns. Children can walk along the paths to relax their minds.
