Disaster relief in Myanmar: Boundless compassion

The Hospital Authority Special Duty Cadre (HASDC) sent a medical team of four to the quake-stricken areas in Myanmar to assist in the rescue work in March. Yet, six months have passed, the unremitting backup by Head Office Major Incident Control Center and Chief Pharmacist's Office, as well as the touching scenes throughout the mission are still imprinted on the team’s mind.

Dr Tsang Wing-hong, Associate Consultant (Accident & Emergency) of United Christian Hospital (left of the photo above): We shared survivor cases, the management of crush injuries, and pre-hospital amputation techniques with rescue teams from the Mainland and Myanmar. With mutual support, the difficult times did not seem so unbearable.

William Chan, Nurse Consultant (Accident & Emergency) of New Territories West Cluster: One disaster victim suffered from chest pain and shortness of breath for several days. Using an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine provided by the China search and rescue teams, I performed an ECG analysis and physical examination for him and found an abnormality. He later thanked me through a translator, which made me realise that my work was truly rewarding.

Pang Ka-ming, Registered Nurse (Accident & Emergency) of Pok Oi Hospital: Before leaving the devastated area, the high school students who assisted with translation gathered around us and sang. Although we did not understand the lyrics, we deeply felt their gratitude. It was unforgettable and heart-warming.

Get set for the National Games

The HA is responsible for providing on-site, hotel, and hospital medical services to athletes, eligible staff, and guests at this year's National Games. Preparations are now in their final stage. HASDC has been actively participating in National Games training and, together with the Fire Services Department, Hong Kong Police Force, and Auxiliary Medical Service etc., taking part in drills at each competition venue to familiarise themselves with the venue layout and to get well prepared for emergencies. Colleagues from HA various departments prepare medical equipment and medication, develop electronic medical record for venues, arrange ‘green passage’ for hospitals, and set up tele-consultation service for hotels, to ensure safe and immediate medical services.
