Applying technology with compassion

It is amazing the technological lengths our colleagues go to in their mission to give patients the best possible care. Those efforts are reflected in the stories of three medical teams in this edition of HASLink.

In one instance, a doctor from the Department of Medicine and Geriatrics at Princess Margaret Hospital trained in Europe and then returned to Hong Kong to conduct intestinal ultrasound scans, helping the hospital become Hong Kong’s first International Bowel Ultrasound Group-certified training centre. He now selflessly trains doctors from different clusters so more patients suffered from inflammatory bowel disease can benefit.

In another case, Intraoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been introduced at Tuen Mun Hospital to ensure maximal tumour removal and improve patient outcomes. And in a third case, fully automatic Robotic Stereotactic Assistance is being used in Queen Mary Hospital to allow for minimally invasive brain surgery, which is of particular benefit to patients with drug resistant epilepsy who are hesitant to undergo traditional surgery. The procedure reduces the risk of epileptic seizures.

In each case, technology has made possible huge improvements in treatment – but technology itself is only a tool. What is at the heart of the Hospital Authority is the most-treasured dedication and compassion of our colleagues, who strive for excellence in patient care.
