Facing the challenges associated with a multi-generational nursing workforce and rising attrition rate among younger nurses, the Nursing Services Department of the Hospital Authority Head Office initiated the ’Nurturing Our Young Generation (NOYG)’ campaign in 2018. Through diverse and engaging events, NOYG aims to foster professional and personal growth among nurses, cultivating a supportive and collaborative workplace culture throughout the organisation.

The NOYG campaign is uniquely planned and led by young nurses themselves, in close partnership with multidisciplinary teams including Clinical Psychological Services and Human Resources. Over the past two years, events under the themes ‘Walk and Grow Together’ and ‘Just Because You’re Here’ have deeply resonated with participants. Down-to-earth sharing sessions, meaningful performances, interactive games, and recognition awards were thoughtfully designed to strengthen mutual understanding among nurses from different generations, reigniting their passion and sense of purpose.

“Stories like a nurse sewing funeral garments as a final gift for a neonate who passed away, or nurses encouraging terminally ill patients to bravely express love to their families, have profoundly touched us. These genuine experiences remind us of the true spirit and original aspirations of nursing profession.” Inspired by these powerful encounters, some attendees have since joined the NOYG team, bringing campaign values back to their workplaces and actively initiating team-building activities that inject energy and positivity into daily environment.

Since its inception, NOYG has significantly expanded its reach beyond hospital walls, engaging nursing students, academic institutions, and even healthcare communities in the Mainland. The campaign’s increasing popularity and resonance have contributed to notably lower attrition rates among young nurses, while simultaneously uplifting the HA’s public image, attracting potential passionate young nursing talents to join the organisation. In recent years, the NOYG team has further evolved and expanded the consultative function to proactively offer the organisation with younger nurses’ insights and influence practical nursing development strategies. By empowering the next generation of nursing leaders, the NOYG campaign continues to sustain and advance the deep-rooted values and legacy of the nursing profession.
