Q: Share one of your memorable days at work and how did that day change your life?

Dr Kong Shun-yin A: The haematology clinic at POH commenced service on 5 August 2022. It is encouraging and affirming that we have successfully developed new haematology service, despite not many patients that day. As the clinic operations have matured, the number of benefiting patients has continued to increase. It is the joint effort of NTWC haematology team and the Department of Medicine and Geriatrics of POH that makes it possible and improves the clinical efficiency in NTWC.

Tang Ngar-chui A: A paralysed patient with intubation had difficulty in expressing himself and frowned a lot. After taking time to get to know him, I realised that his face was itchy, and the smelly hair and neck collar bothered him. Hence, I washed and cut his hair in the hospital bed and provided him with a new neck collar. During the visit, his family cried and expressed their gratitude, and the patient did his best to say thank you with his lips. We cannot cure all diseases, but I hope to try my best to understand and take care of the patients’ needs.

Dr Fergus Wong Kai-chuen A: That was the day when I performed a nearly total mandibulectomy and reconstruction surgery for a patient suffering from recurrent oral cancer. Since the patient had received radiotherapy and multiple flap surgeries previously, the surgical technique was very demanding, yet the only hope for the patient. After 23 hours, the operation was completed successfully. The success of an operation and a good recovery of patient are the greatest motivations for a surgeon. I will continue to enhance myself and provide high-quality treatment to my patients.

Dr Kevin Fung Kin-fen A: It was the day when I had to perform embolisation on a two-week-old new born baby weighing two kilograms for a life-threatening vascular liver tumour. The baby was smaller than my arm and we had to come up with ingenious ways to gain access to her vessels. The procedure was successful and she is now a healthy and happy girl. This day encouraged me to think out of the box whenever I encounter tricky cases.
