Supporting staff undergo nursing training for free with full pay study leave

Hospital Authority (HA) has launched the Training Sponsorship Programme for Supporting Staff to undergo Enrolled Nurse (General) training (EN(G)) since 2011-12, providing training and career development for supporting staff through a two-year EN(G) training programme with full pay study leave. Upon successful completion of the programme and receiving professional recognition, graduates are eligible to apply for EN(G). Two new graduates share with us their experiences.

Case 1: Inspired by the dedication of frontline professionals

Rico joined HA in 2018 and was a clerical staff in the department of radiology. During the epidemic, she witnessed the frontline healthcare professionals who were working tirelessly to take care of patients, motivating her to pitch in together. She then enrolled the programme. On a haematology ward where she did her placement, she found the patients stayed optimistic even undergoing prolonged chemotherapy treatment. It greatly encouraged Rico who was facing huge academic pressure.

She says the programme includes a wide range of clinical practicum, providing her an opportunity to experience the work environment and ward operation, so that she could equip herself. Rico is nervous and excited about becoming a nurse. “I wish I could apply my knowledge and skills at clinical work and address the physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being of patients. Until one day, they discharge from the hospital,” says Rico.

Case 2: March to your own beat with financial support

Kay was also a clerical staff at ward, who gradually developed an interest towards nursing. When she learnt that HA’s sponsorship programme helps colleagues to switch career path free from worry, she decided to realise her dream with the support of colleagues. From the beginning, she applied the skills and knowledge to practice. And now, she witnessed the patients once being taken care by her to discharge with a big smile. It was such an unforgettable experience for her.

Kay appreciates the programme successfully relieved her financial burden. She looks forward to integrating theory and practice in future, and proactively improving herself. Most importantly, keep her passion for nursing.

Application period
