Portable scanner assesses spines in seconds

Portable ultrasound scolioscan
Functions and advantages: Scolioscan is a palm-sized, ultrasound-based assessment system integrated with 3D optical sensing technology to obtain spinal images. It is faster, lighter and radiation-free.Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that commonly appears in late childhood or adolescence. Patients with mild symptoms require regular follow-ups during puberty to monitor curve progression and exercises prescribed by physiotherapist. Last year, the Physiotherapy Department at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital introduced a portable ultrasound scoliosis assessment device which can assess spine curvature in 30 seconds to a minute.
Advanced Practice Physiotherapist Rachel Ma explains, “not only is the Scolioscan free of radiation, but it also has a significant correlation with the x-ray result. This allows patients and healthcare professionals to know the effectiveness of physiotherapy treatment in between x-ray check-ups which are usually arranged at intervals of nine to 12 months.” Physiotherapist uses the Scolioscan to reveal the real-time effect of treatment, which has greatly increased patients’ exercise adherence and commitment. “Patients and parents’ eyes lit up when they see improvement in spine curvature. They immediately jot down notes of exercises so that they can continue practising at home,” says Rachel.
Scoliostudio, an upgraded software which creates 3D spinal profiles and model, has been obtained by the Physiotherapy Department to allow more comprehensive assessment and treatment. The department also has plans to expand its services in the future to include young patients who are referred for back pain, and to conduct early screening for spinal condition.
