Overseas trained doctors returned to serve the needed
To alleviate manpower pressure, doctors who trained overseas are allowed to work in Hong Kong public hospitals under limited registration or special registration scheme. As at 31 July 2022, a total of 46 non-locally trained doctors are working in HA. A post-80s doctor Timothy Tsui returned in 2019 through limited registration and is now working as a Resident of Family Medicine and Primary Care in the Hong Kong East Cluster. He wishes to continue his vision to serve in public healthcare for the patients in need.
Timothy left Hong Kong with his family after he finished primary school and went on to become a family medicine doctor in the US. “After practising for a year, I decided to change my life and experience a new environment. I finally chose Hong Kong because I can use my mother tongue in consultations.” The biggest difference for Timothy was the volume of patients in Hong Kong is much more than that he dealt with in the US. “I may not remember all the patients. Some of them, however, remember me and listen to my advice on matters like avoiding certain foods. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see their health improved.”
Dr Frankie Ng, who has completed his specialty training in the UK, came back to Hong Kong for spending more time with his family last year. He is currently the Associate Consultant (Anaesthesia and Operating Theatre Services) of Tuen Mun Hospital under the limited registration scheme. Frankie realises that Hong Kong is such a favourable place for him not just stay closer to his family, but also to develop his career and build new friendships. “I’ve made the right decision to come home,” says Frankie.
Both doctors agree while they enjoy the convenient and vibrant lifestyle in the city, they could also achieve work-life balance. They would like to get full registration in future and will keep watching out for the latest policies.
