Robot family plays effective role in sustainable development

Featuring the broadcasting nightingale @PYNEH

Three new colleagues have recently been employed in the cleaning team in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH). These new members are recognisable with their unique appearance, and will always greet you with a familiar voice saying, “I will do my job wholeheartedly!” That’s the voice of Chea Shuk-mui, the broadcasting nightingale.

Last July, the administrative services department of PYNEH ‘hired’ the three smart cleaning robots. They are responsible for the daily cleaning in public areas, and also share the cleaning work after renovation or relocation of wards. Every time when the ‘new colleagues’ are cleaning, audios recorded by Chea Shuk-mui in Cantonese, English and Mandarin will be played, in order to remind the public, especially the slow-moving patients, to keep distance from the robots at work to prevent accidents.
Function: Clean 3,000 square meters per hour at top speed and automatically operate for four to six hours after every charge
Benefits: Clean and reuse the sewage with the in-built system which can save 80% of the water consumption for the sake of environmental protection

“This is Tem, I would like to remind you that, whenever you need to go to toilet or get something, just ring the bell and call us for help. If you are unlucky to fall down, it could cause you bone fracture, or even cerebral hemorrhage.” Tem and Mimi, the newly introduced robot nurses, had been delivering the service since last November at the Medicine and Geriatrics Ward in Shatin Hospital, to alert the patients about fall prevention and provide tele-visits.

In order to cater the needs of elderly patients with dementia, Tem and Mimi would help strengthen the cognitive training for patients through making announcement about the date, and the time for medication and meals, as well as reminding patients to clean their hands before eating and to put on a mask after meal.

Besides, both of them are equipped with a wide HD monitor that enables tele-visits for the patients with their family members. “There was once that a patient with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia who refused to take his medicines and threw his temper by littering around. Just as Tem was making an announcement, it came up to our mind that the patient could have a video call with his grandson with the help of Tem. Soon, he was calmed after hearing his grandson said, ‘Grandpa, be sure to take your pills. We will see each other when you recover. Promise me?’ That definitely works much better than lobbying.” Says Woo Lai-chun, Ward Manager. The outstanding performance of the ‘two staff’ was also recognised by nurse Yip Wing-ki who praises their understanding of patients’ interests, for example, playing Jacky Cheung’s songs and providing mahjong games, that fill the medical ward with joy and laughter.
