Part I ¡V Patients' Rights

Right to Medical Treatment

  • To receive medical advice and treatment which fully meets currently accepted standards of care and quality

Right to Information

  • About what health care services are available, and what charges are involved
  • Be given a clear description of medical condition, with diagnosis, prognosis and treatment proposed including risks and alternatives
  • To know the names of medication to be prescribed, its actions and potential side-effects
  • Access to medical information relating to condition and treatment

Right to Choices

  • To accept or refuse any medication, investigation or treatment, and be informed of likely consequences
  • To choose whether to take part in medical research programs
  • To seek a second medical opinion
  • To have privacy, dignity, religious and cultural beliefs respected
  • To have information relating to medical condition kept confidential
  • To make a complaint through channels provided by HA, and to have any complaint dealt with promptly and fairly

Part II ¡V Patients Responsibilities

A patient should:

  • Give health care providers as much information as possible about present health, past illness, any allergies and other relevant details
  • Show consideration for rights of other patients and health care providers, by following hospital rules on patient conduct
  • Follow prescribed and agreed treatment plan, and conscientiously comply with instructions given
  • Keep appointment made, or notify hospital/clinic as early as possible if unable to do so
  • Should not ask health care providers to provide incorrect information, receipts or certificates
  • Should not waste medical resources
